Would drive the hour just for the fried ice cream
I have lived in Vegas over 15 years and haven't found a sit down Mexican restaurant yet that could rival my favorites I had as a kid in Los Angeles. However, the food at this restaurant surpassed them all. First of all, the chips were crisp and fell apart, almost melted when I ate them. The salsa was good and there was a little salsa bar that had a hotter red sauce and a green sauce. I had the cheese enchilada and tamale plate while my husband had the cheese enchilada and chile relleno, and we enjoyed the taste of them very much. I was delighted with the red sauce which I felt was homemade. The rice and beans were also excellent, I cleaned my plate. Both my husband and I were full but couldn't resist the fried ice cream. The ice cream was rolled in corn flakes, and I think they were the frosted variety, then quick fried because the ice cream was still frozen in the center. It was placed in a bowl made out of a pie crust that was deep fried & sprinkled with cinnamon & sugar. Whip cream topped the ice cream & it was drizzled with strawberry sauce with a cherry on top.
The atmosphere was okay. It was located in a little community strip mall and the inside of the restaurant did need some small repairs (i.e. I noticed one of the booths had a tear in the upholstery that was mended with duck tape.) I would not go on a romantic date here but I would bring the family for some good food at a decent price. I think all of the combo plates were under $10, if not then most of them were anyway. It was clean and the staff was friendly and attentive.
All in all, I would love to eat there again on my next visit to Mesquite or even just to take a Sunday drive up there and eat the fried ice cream. Yum!
