Steaksmith at El Gancho
The lines of people waiting outside this popular restaurant on the southern fringes of town are not only enjoying the scenery. They are waiting to bite into some of Santa Fe's best steak at the Steaksmith at El Gancho. Founded in 1975, the restaurant maintains its reputation for quality food and service. The appetizer menu is a listing of 23 different Spanish Tapas, ranging from Fried Avocado to grilled Prickly Pear Cactus. The Fresh Salmon is flown fresh from the Pacific Northwest daily and the steaks are aged to mouthwatering perfection.
How can 8 people be on the floor yet no 1 particular person is assigned 1 table??? No one bothered to check on our table once our food was served. $25 plate was not worth it! Applebee s has better service & food. The only 3 people that were good were the front end hostess, the bar help (Chris) and the person who took our payment....I wish he would ve been our waiter. I live in SF & am really disappointed & will never go back.....& discourage others from ever going there. The floor manager was happy swinging the keys back and while parading around..not until 6:30 did she show up..but ignored our table completely while we were looking for someone to pay our bill. Don t waste your money or time!
The minute we walked in we were greeted and seated, even tho the dining room was hopping. Our server was right there greeting us with a smile and informing us of our menu choices and that they work as a team system, so if it wasn't this server helping us it was another. Great service!! We started with apps, spinach cheese balls and Jeannie Shrimp, yummy! Our drinks from the bar took sometime, but understandably they were very busy. The steaks were cooked as requested, char outside red inside. Great time, we will return.
10/10/06: My family & I ate at this restaurant last night and it was horrible. Service was poor, sloppy & inattentive. I had the chipotle chicken. My food overcooked, tasteless, lukewarm & overpriced. My brother had the shrimp & scallop plate & had the same feedback. Our dinner salads were small, used canned/boxed products & unimaginative. The server spilled the salad dressing on the table when serving me, and didn't bother cleaning it up. My server was a slob w/untucked blouse, had to wait over 1.5 hours for our main course, and 15 mins. for water. When we implied that our meal was not good, she just pursed her lips & moved on to the next table - no damage control. Took us ages to check out & leave the restaurant because there was a busload of 60 people leaving ahead of us. This is the type of place for tour groups, not for people looking for a great dining experience. I think I was the only person under 50 there.
Eat in the bar -- better food selection and cheaper. And the difference in space just a left turn instead of a right. We were disappointed in the limited selection in the restaurant and, as I waited for my companion to return from the bathroom when we were leaving, I checked the bar menu and found a wider selection of foods and lower prices! Looking at what people were eating in there, it was the same sized plates! We felt cheated!
My wife and I both like eating here, and it is a popular spot for locals. The steaks and fish are always very good. The sides are good, and the salad is fresh. The ambiance is steakhouse good, and the service is excellent. Be sure to make a reservation for dinner. The bar can even make a negroni!
