The original Owl Cafe was born 150 miles south of Albuquerque and grew in popularity among desert travelers and nuclear scientists on their way to, or through, White Sands Missile Range. The Albuquerque location was built in the early 1990s to resemble a 1950s-era diner. Although the atmosphere is decidedly different from the original cafe, the cheeseburgers are the same and they were. Add the onion twirls and you will have more than a meal. Daily Blue Plate Specials are for sale. Homemade cakes, cookies and pies are available, but few customers have room left.
Try and eat here everytime I go to New Mexico. Huge milk shakes that are great. As is everything on their menu. Pancakes are so big you can share. Wait staff is fantastic. They greet me and joke with me as soon as I walk in the door.
Never knew anything about the Owl Cafe on our way to Phoenix. We decided to stop in, & what a cool looking diner from the 50's. Had great service & the waitress, per my asking, recommended the country fried steak & gravy dinner. Wonderful! While waiting on our order, saw other orders arriving, & the portions are big. Would definitely eat there again.
I first discovered the Owl in 2000 during a trip to ABQ. Now it's my first and last stop any time I go out there, and I make it a point to call my best friend just to rub it in that I'm eating there and he isn't.......I recommend this place to anyone
The last time I was in Albuquerque, a friend talked me into a green chile cheeseburger somewhere else. NEVER AGAIN. I will be back in a couple of weeks and I am heading straight to the Owl - best green chile with cheeseburger anywhere. The other food looks good too but I never get past my favorite with sometimes, a great thick chocolate shake. I can hardly wait to get back to the Owl Cafe.
From TEXAS... what a great find! Every time I am in Albuquerque I pop in to the OWL... the Green Chili Cheese Burger with Xtra Cheese is FAB'dabulous, NO KIDDING! And don't forget the Chocolate Shake - best in the West! ...Great people, great service, great food... what a great place to eat if you love Diner food!!! Can't wait for my next visit... Family friendly! Old style diner in a horseshoe shape. Get a chocolate malt(served with a glass and the metal mixer) onion loaf and a green chili cheeseburger. Also, the breakfast will tide you over until dinner. Great Value.
My boyfriend's family raved about this little restaurant that they found in NM their last vacation. I was not convinced that it could be as good as they claimed. Turns out that the Owl Cafe was everything they said and more. The service is GREAT and both manager and owner themselves came by to see how we were doing. Nothing is prepackaged and the green chile that they put on the cheeseburger is homemade and the best that I tasted in New Mexico. This place is a favorite of celebrities, locals and tourists. If you stay in the Howard Johnson behind their parking lot, you can even get their food in room service. I recommend this place to EVERYONE!!! if you are going to New Mexico this is definately a must-eat! Also, if you are a fan of the food network, they have been featured on the show as one of the best restaurants in the country!
