For the last 20 years Frontier has slowly acquired the better part of the block facing Central Avenue across from the UNM campus. You will see study groups, people having coffee and lunch or the famous Frontier Cinnamon Roll, which is a huge, fresh sweet roll swimming in butter. The atmosphere is western and simple, with booths and tables. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at no particular time. New Mexican dishes, sandwiches, soups, stew and salads, chicken, ribs, fresh squeezed juice, sodas, tea and cappuccino are also offered. Frontier has special timings for holidays.
The is In fact the best food New Mexico has to offer! The tortillas made fresh everyday, juice squeezed all the time! Whats fun is that you can actually see them make those items! The sweet rolls BEWARE! You can get addicted to them! Nothing like a warm buttery sweet roll washed down with fresh coffee will make your day of studies just go in the right direction!
Heard good things about the place and its Breakfast Burrito, but was diasappointed. Was an average size burrito, flour torilla was doughy, only two slices of bacon and a hint of green chile and cheese. Not great for $5. Guess I'm used to burritos that are almost twice as large for $4 (San Diego, CA places)
There are certain places where you go and you just know it's going to be good. Frontier is one of them. And you can't beat the hours. Whether you are just passing through on old 66 or are pulling an all-nighter for your UNM Psych class, you can depend on Frontier to get you through the night. Fresh coffee, lots of green chile and tortillas to go ($2.50 a dozen) are a staple of Albuquerque cuisine, but Frontier does it best. A must-visit (and so is it's sister restaurant, Golden Pride, out in the Burbs).
The Frontier is a one-of-a-kind restaurant and local college favorite. It's as close to UNM as possible, without actually being on campus, and offers some excellent local foods, as well as some unique specialties. My favorites are green chile stew, and the sweet rolls that everyone talks about!
