For the last 20 years Frontier has slowly acquired the better part of the block facing Central Avenue across from the UNM campus. You will see study groups, people having coffee and lunch or the famous Frontier Cinnamon Roll, which is a huge, fresh sweet roll swimming in butter. The atmosphere is western and simple, with booths and tables. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at no particular time. New Mexican dishes, sandwiches, soups, stew and salads, chicken, ribs, fresh squeezed juice, sodas, tea and cappuccino are also offered.
its pretty good place, super crowded always! lots of people, but there are lots of registers so the wait isnt crazy long- thats the bonus;
the breakfast burrito with carne adovada is my pick $5.49 plus $1.50?extra for the meat?; the coffee is just ok -average,
i see the historic attraction to this place but really personally the crowds keep me from being a regular; BUT their cinnamon rolls are to die for! serious YUM...so get a cinnie, a regular breakfast burrito to go, grab a coffee from winners down the street and sit someplace quiet & yur good to go! ;^)
and oh yu'll spend less than 10bux [[NICE]] speaking of nice the staff is consistently nice warm and welcoming. the tables are bussed fast and ready for the ever approaching swarm of regulars & tourists!
My husband and I went out there for the Hot Air Balloon Festival from Los Angeles. Our shuttle would only take us to Yale right in front of UNM. We saw a lot of people dining at the Frontier and most of them were having burritos. So, we decided to go in there and give it a shot! Oh my goodness! It is the best of the best! I ate there everyday after that. The chilly stew is to die for and my favorite burrito was the carne adovada! This trip was outstanding and what helped it was your food. My only question is, is there a restaurant out here? I give it a BIG 10!!
It is a must dining experience. Order at the window, get your plate and silverware and find a seat. Ambiance is inner cityish with lots of character. The food is gummy and affordable. Try hanging where the locals and college kids hang. Have fun and chill. The frontier will always satisfy your hunger almost any time of day
Warning: Frontier uses MSG on their foods. There is a faded sign behind the cashiers that states they use MSG. I ordered the steak and eggs and requested that they did not use MSG. They complied and the food was good but obviously less tender and salty. I would like to see Frontier stop the practice of using this dangerous chemical. There are many other choices to use when tenderizing or inhancing the savory flavors of food.
Frontier is a landmark- one of the first places I went when I moved to town for school and four years later I am still going back. The food is real good, always hits the spot and you can't beat the prices. There are so many things on the menu that I like to order, it can be a tough decision. The house-made tortillas are perfect, I have gone just to buy a bag to take home. If you come to / live in Albuquerque you should stop by, it is nothing fancy but that is the charm in it. Yum!
