Duran Central Pharmacy

Description

Located on historic Route 66 , Duran Central Pharmacy offers a small selection of some of the best New Mexican fare to be found in Albuquerque. This is a lively place that is always busy around lunch time. With a classic soda fountain atmosphere, this joint has you work your way through the aisles of the drug store to get to the dining area. The menu remains small as everything is prepared fresh, daily. The specialty of the house is a bowl of Green Chile Stew, which is served with a homemade flour tortilla on the side.

This first time I went here, I really liked it. The second time I went, it was barely edible. I was disappointed, because I really wanted it to become one of our regular breakfast places. It quickly fell off our favorite's list.

A Little Ambiance Please!
By L., 6/29/07
For those who have frequented Duran's since Route 66 passed by in front, I can understand the "neighborly" appeal. But, for first-timers to Durans like myself (and an Albuquerquean for over 20 years), why pay such prices to sit in the back of a pharmacy? There are dozens of "family-owned" New Mexican restaurants in the city, that offer similar prices (or better!), along with some NM "atmosphere!" Good food, and fair service, but let's get real. I also had the huevos-rancheros recommended by another reviewer. Far from great! "w/Mashed potatoes?" I've never seen such a thing in all my years in NM! Also, a "very" limited menu, especially if you've got picky kids along. P.S. Duran's is a very nice pharmacy. I saw things on it's shelves that you never see in the chains like Walgreens anymore. If you're a tourist, go here for your much needed sunscreen, not lunch!

Best Huevos Rancheros On Earth
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/24/06
Don't be fooled by the name of this place... There is no place on the planet with better huevos rancheros other than a native New Mexican grandma's kitchen!!!!And you don't need the butter on the homemade tortillas because they are superb by themselves drenched in green chili!

Back in the olden days...
By Greener, 3/17/06
Used to be a lot of cafes/soda fountains in the backs of drugstores. They were probably replaced by fast food joints. Fast food, this isn't, thank goodness. Although the green chile is quite mild, it's among the most flavorful around. The dining area is very clean but stark. Not a lot of ambiance happening here. Just good food. It's not as inexpensive as I thought it'd be ($20 for breakfast for two, including tip) but if I lived in the area, it would probably be a regular breakfast haunt. As someone already pointed out, this is a cash only business, so be prepared.

Very nice
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/15/05
How often do you get to eat a really good meal in the back of a pharmacy? Not that often. Quality food, great and accomodating waitstaff and the price is right. Try the torpedo, you won't be dissapointed.
