In the same location since 1949, this family-run restaurant has been under the current ownership since the late 1970s. This comfortable, casual spot focuses on hearty-healthy choices and offers more than 150 menu options. The house specialty, Cucuruchos, are flour tortilla cones filled with your choice of chicken, beans or green or red chile beef with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and guacamole, an ice-cream cone-like entree. Other popular items are their Gorditas (thick corn cakes) and Barbacoa (the Mexican version of barbecue).
My family and I went to this restraunt to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday. The main waiter was very rude! I was surprised at his condescending comment. The waiters practically threw the plates at us. I have never received such poor service. I couldn't believe this service, since this was a large party that had been planned months in advance. Being Hispanic from Southern California, I can honestly say that this food is not authentic. I will never return. I won't recommend this restraunt to anyone.
My husband recently took me to Karichimaka's. I didn't know it existed, but his family had been going there since he was a boy, 50+ years ago. The food was fantastic, authentic, definitely Tucson's best Mexican restaurant.
We are regulars at Karichimaka. The food is very good, staff friendly and attentive. You can get a small pitcher of beer for only $2.95. Its very pleasant sitting by the windows. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
We showed up at the restaurant at about 8:30 P.M. There were about 3 cars in the parking lot. The host was standing there waiting when we walked in. He said follow me, which we did. there were only about 10 other guests in the restaurant. He sat my wife and I along with our 3 small children at a table in the far corner at the front of the restaurant. When the bill came it read $75.00. I had to ask for a receipt that showed what we ordered. They put down that I had ordered more drinks than I did. The bill was corrected and I paid it. I asked to see the receipt again before leaving because I was going to leave a cash tip. I noticed a gratuity of 15% which totaled $9.45. I asked why a gratuity had been added and was told that at that particular table that we sat at, they always at that gratuity. It was just me, my wife, and my 4, 6, and 8 year old children. I am all about leaving a tip. But the service was not very good as well as the table we sat at did not appear to have been cleaned when we were there. Needless to say, I do not recommend this restaurant.
I have eaten at so many delicious Mexican food restaurants in Tucson, and this one really stands out!
The food is delicious. The salsa is home made (I knew when I tasted it, but I asked just to make sure) and it was so good, they couldn't bring me refills fast enough. Their guacamole is almost all avocados, unlike some places that use filler like tons of onions, and every one else that I was with loved their meals too.
It is a few dollars more than some of the less expensive Mexican restaurants, but well worth it. The ambience was exactly what you would want for a place like that, and the service was fantastic, our server was so friendly and very prompt. I definitely recommend it!
I have been going there since the 60's! Great food and fantastic service. We have gotten the same waiters for the past 3 years (at least). He always knows what we want (too predictable). I just hate it when they close for that 1 month, it's just too long. If you haven't been you gotta go
Every other Friday my girlfriend and I meet there for dinner. We keep coming back because the service is excellent, friendly, and prompt. The food is tasty with one of the best chips and salsa in town. We also like the casual ambiance.
It can be pretty busy so call ahead to avoid the wait... and if you have to wait is well worth it!
