I've been to every Thai restaurant in Tucson, and this is one of the two worst ones. When I first came to town years ago, the food was very good, and I used to go there regularly because of the great vegan menu dishes. Well, I've returned several times in recent years to try to replicate that experience, with increasingly bad luck The sauces of the coconut curries (which were my favorite) are now watery, bland, and dishwater-like. The vegetables tend to be overcooked and yucky. The good cook must have moved on. I have now stopped going to Karuna Thai altogether.
As with many foreign-managed restaurants it's hard to get a straight answer about whether or not the vegan items are really vegan, or if there's fish paste or other non-vegan ingredients.
The woman who runs the place is apparently very unhappy, and unfortunately she's always there, often waiting tables. She was overtly contemptuous toward my party several times before I stopped going.
Karuna's has a great location, a cozy setting, reasonable prices, and plenty of vegetarian menu options in a town of starving vegans. But something needs to change before I'll try to eat there again, starting with new management and a new cook.
