Karuna's Thai Plate

Description

It's small and the service can be somewhat off, but many Tucsonans consider this to be the best Thai place in town. There are many vegetarian options ranging from salads to noodle dishes and curries. A few items considered to be standouts are: Pad Prig King (chicken and green beans in red curry sauce); Koo Chai (pan-fried rice cakes filled with chives); or duck with vegetables simmered in coconut milk and curry). No alcoholic beverages are served, but you can call ahead and bring wine or beer.

My family goes here all the time. The service is a little off, true, but there flavorful food more than makes up for it. A group of people can easily share a soup and the pad tai is fantastic. Wouldn't roccomned for people with peanut allergies, but overall this is a fantastic place. My particular favorite is the Hot and Spicy soup. Delicious!

I go to this place all the time and love the food! I do agree that the service is terrible, but what can you expect from a hole in the wall family run restaurant? I mean half the time there's only one waitress/ bustboy/ cashier/ takeout person. I've been to all the other thai restaurants in town and only one other has compared to the real authentic taste of thai home style cooking. If you want american flavored thai food that's overpriced, then go elsewhere. Those bad reviews must have come from some chump who meant to go to panda express.

I've been to every Thai restaurant in Tucson, and this is one of the two worst ones. When I first came to town years ago, the food was very good, and I used to go there regularly because of the great vegan menu dishes. Well, I've returned several times in recent years to try to replicate that experience, with increasingly bad luck The sauces of the coconut curries (which were my favorite) are now watery, bland, and dishwater-like. The vegetables tend to be overcooked and yucky. The good cook must have moved on. I have now stopped going to Karuna Thai altogether. As with many foreign-managed restaurants it's hard to get a straight answer about whether or not the vegan items are really vegan, or if there's fish paste or other non-vegan ingredients. The woman who runs the place is apparently very unhappy, and unfortunately she's always there, often waiting tables. She was overtly contemptuous toward my party several times before I stopped going. Karuna's has a great location, a cozy setting, reasonable prices, and plenty of vegetarian menu options in a town of starving vegans. But something needs to change before I'll try to eat there again, starting with new management and a new cook.

BEWARE: The worst service I've experienced.
By ,
The food is very good. The price is very reasonable. However, the service is very very very bad, I would never go back again to the restaurant. I went there so many times...and at first I thought it was only me who was being sensitive, but all my friends thought that the owner and her staffs were so rude and impolite too. She even yelled at my friend...because he was laughing at something that did not have anything to do with her. I would not recommend anyone to go there. It's a big NO restaurant. I'd rather spend money on Thai food at more expensive Thai restaurants than being treated inappropriately by the owner and her staffs. Hope this review helps!:D

too bad!

The food at Karuna's is always superb and they offer a wide range of dishes. However, the service is the worst I have ever encountered anywhere. I have been to Karuna's over a dozen times and no matter who serves me they are always curt, impatient and dissmissive. I find it hard to enjoy eating in a place where the staff seems so annoyed at the fact that there are actually patrons in the restaraunt. If you can laugh at the absurdity of the abysmal service give it a try but I would not suggest it. I have found another Thai restaraunt in town that is not as tasty and more expensive but it is worth the price not to be treated so shabbily.

Yummy

The best Thai food in Tucson. We go often and always have the vegetarian fried rice and the Panang Curry...both with great tofu...the spices and flavors are so good we always can't wait to go again. We order the spices medium and they are perfect. The decor is bad and they need better air conditioning and service but the food is always worth it! Well worth the money!

Awsome food!

Not for the needy who demand constant attention; but if you're looking for authentic Thai food this is the place to go. I highly suggest trying the rad na, and pineapple fried rice.
