Athens on Fourth Avenue
You won't get much closer to a Greek gastronomic experience without a passport! Simply decorated with stark white walls and wooden floors, this Greek cafe is one of Tucson's top choices for Mediterranean meals. The Fourth Avenue shopping and arts district is home to this tavern-type restaurant that offers all of the classic Greek specialties, plus some interesting additions. Among these are the Thalasina Sardorinis seafood platter and Mezethakia (a combination platter of sausage, sweetbreads and pork tenderloin). Dinner entrees are priced from about USD8 to USD20. An interesting list of Greek wines can be had for about USD4-6 a glass. Many bottles are priced below USD20. The cocktail bar is open 5pm to 11pm Monday through Thursday, 5pm to midnight Friday and Saturday.
The food, service and ambience are all wonderful at Athens........We enjoyed a fun saganaki appetizer which they lit on fire at the table, then had some very fresh and well cooked salmon, perfectly seasoned.......my husband had the moussaka and he loved it......Even though we were full we couldn't leave without trying the homeade desserts....We chose Galakoboreki or something like that, it was a baked custard with phyllo pastry like a baklava, but served warm. It was heavenly......oh, and the wine choices were great, we orded a nice bottle of moskofilero......delicious. I believe we will become regulars at this restaurant from now on. Our waitress was so sweet too and very accomadating and attentive......Overall a great dining experience.
The food at this restaurant can be hit or miss. Sometimes it is very good, sometimes it is overcooked or comes out cold-ish. The service is the same; sometimes very good, at other times the restaurant seems in total disarray........The owner visits each table and talks to the customers and trys to push wine on everyone, depending on your outlook on whether or not you want some guy bugging you when you are out to dinner, this may be a pro or con to you......Overall i would rate athens mediocre, and will be visiting some of the other new greek restaurants I have heard are opening up in Tucson, hopefully the food at these new restaurants will be as good as Athens food, but the consistency above Athens level......I would recommend visiting this restaurant, but don't expect every visit to be great.......
This place serves the best Dolmathes in Arizona. Its a cute place and the music is actually GREEK. A nice atmosphere and friendly people. but whatever you do, you have to get the dolmathes!!!!!!! They are the best I have had outside if Greece itself.
Coming from a Greek family, of which 50% live in Greece, and expecting authentic and enjoyable Greek cuisine, I was very upset after dining at Athens on 4th. Not only was the food way over priced, but it was tasteless (except for the soup). Paying $60 for two people to eat for LUNCH - 2 Entrees and 1 app, I would NEVER go here again.
