Rock Springs Cafe and General Store
Are you on your way from Phoenix to Flagstaff? Then fuel up at the Rock Springs Cafe. This old fashioned restaurant and store serves up a wholesome, traditional breakfast. Also available are family-style meals, barbeques, steaks and burgers. Known to bake the best homemade pies, you cannot forget to pick one up for the road. Surrounded by the great scenery and traditional food, you feel like you have been transported back to the 1920s. Live country music is played every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
I would have to say this place is heading down hill fast, the food and service has gotten worse with each visit. It used to be a decent place to grab a cup of coffee and a bite, now it is just a tourist trap, dedicated to all show and no go. On my latest and most likely last visit, there was nothing good to say about this place. My advice, save your money and head up the street to Bylers Café, there you can get an honest meal.
I have seen reviews of some form for Rock Springs Cafe for several years. I've been searching for the pie that equals my mother's in excellence and I was very excited to visit the cafe. Unfortunately, Rock Springs is not even on the map when it comes to a good homemade pie let alone a great one.
I bought 3 pies; rhubarb, peach & apple. They looked great, but that is where the good ended. The peach was cut first and revealed crunchy, unsweetened and unripe peaches with an uncooked bottom crust. The crust was so doughy that it balled up on the plate.
I figured that maybe the cafe QC(quality control) was on vacation for the peach pie so I threw it away and tried the rhubarb. The best word I can use to describe it is DISGUSTING!!! I grew up eating raw rhubarb from my mother's Montana garden so I'm not a stranger to it. I know what properly prepared rhubarb pie tastes like and this pie was not even close. I first saw that the crust was as doughy as the peach pie so I thought to save it and popped it in the oven. That improved the crust a bit, but there was nothing to be done about the gooey bitter mess of filling.
QC was at least half awake for the checking of the apple pie. The crust was almost done, the apples were almost not crunchy, and it was almost sweet. I think it was baked first with the last of the sugar and the last of the oven heat.
The best advise I can give to anyone who is a true baked-from-scratch pie lover is to pass on the pies from Rock Springs Cafe. One piece of the 3 pies was eaten and the rest was thrown in the trash. I wish I would have saved my $40 and had my mom send me one from MT.
Rock Springs is well known for thier pie, you mention Rock Springs Cafe & everyone says oh yes you have great pies, We love to eat at Rock Springs Cafe, They have great burgers & steaks, mt daughter loves the chicken strips, my son always gets the bacon cheese burger and my oldest son gets the grilled chiken salad. There have been a few times we were not happy with the overall service & food, but within the last year things have really changed. The service is great the food is great, everyone seems to be very plesant. They have been renovating the outdoor patio. It looks great, green grass, beautiful plants & flowers but still the oldwest feel. We attended the last HogsNHeat on June 7 and it was great. We will be attended the one in July.
My husband and I have passed the Rock Springs going to Phoenix for years. We have seen the parking lot jammed and thought it must be good. We've even seen it on Arizona Highways. We finally decided to give it a try. First off we waited in line looking in at the dining room which was full of dirty, uncleared tables for almost 20 minutes. We were finally seated by a waitress who brought us to a table with no chairs. Once she found us chairs she gave us menus and took our drink order. Our sodas arrived promptly. When we ordered we were told it may take a while because they were on shift change. Well, after about 40 minutes and people all around us getting their food we called the waitress over and asked what was up with our order, she blamed it on the kitchen. When we explained that everyone around us, including people who sat after us had received their food. She just kept saying she didn't know what to tell us. We asked to speak to the manager. The manager arrived and we explained the situation, she stated that there were some new cooks in the kitchen. That was NO excuse for us, all we ordered was a hamburger and a club sandwich. She offered to comp our meal. At this point we were so disgusted and angry we said no we just wanted to leave. She then offered us a pie to take home which we accepted. It was a horrible experience and we will NEVER return.
On our second visit to Rock Springs I was forgiving of the first time because I felt there was a misunderstanding about my order. I had ordered a salad with ranch dressing and not the dressing that was included. I got my salad and it had the dressing that was included, not even ranch on the side. The salad was very good though even if the waitress acted put-out because I wanted something different. The second time was just yesterday...the same messy, poorly groomed waitress came over to our table, acting like she was bored, disengage with us and didn't really want to be there. While taking our order she did not give me adequate time to give her my full order, she just assumed what I wanted then became engaged in conversation with the person with me. Multiple attempts to interrupt their conversation to add some additional order items was futile. She walked away, ignoring my hand signals and attempts to get a word in edge-wise. My lunch partner ended up walking up to the counter to put in my additional order. I was fuming at this point. I had given this place one more try and was disappointed. I will not be going back! I sent an email to the management from their website I'm sure nothing will change. After reading these reviews I see that waitress must still be working there. Don't these people realized that in this economy it is a real treat to be able for most of us to even afford to have lunch somewhere. Come on Rock Springs Cafe, live up to your reputation and stop riding the coat tails of your past...because your business is doomed to fail if you don't start changing and make customer service your number 1 priority!
We had heard alot about this place and the great homemade pies. The only problem is that it took close to an hour to get our meals!!!!! My wife's meal looked like yesterday's road kill and my fried chicken dinner never did show up. We left and never tried the pies as we didn't want to wait anymore.
We won a gift certificate at a Christmas party and decided to try it out. We heard the pies were to die for, but heard nothing about the food….there was a reason why. I ordered fish and chips and my husband ordered the fried chicken. How you can mess either of these meals up is beyond me, but they did. It was obviously all frozen food, which is fine I knew I wasn’t going to a five star restaurant, but the food had NO flavor to it. I mean nothing at all, it was so bad that I wanted to send it back, but I didn’t want to have any money left on my gift certificate that’s how bad it was.
Our waiter was great but we called for a reservation an hour in advanced, they said we would need a reservation and when we got there they said they couldn’t fill our reservation.
For having the “best pie in the world” I would say it was far from it.
