Great food, awesome service, I have been to many Japanese restaurants here in Arizona, and I have to say this is the best! Many of the staff are from Osaka, Japan and they gave me many pointers and information about the area as I wish to travel there by next year. I will definitely continue to visit again and again!
I never write reviews but thought it would be appropriate since I chose this restaurant based on the reviews. All the reviews were right! I have lived in Phoenix for 3 years and this is the only Japanese restaurant that I have had that has great sushi. The slices of fish are huge and the rice underneath it is minimal. I have eaten really good sushi in NYC and the LA area, and this sushi is right up there!
Have to say... best in any state besides California.... and then it would probably stack up and hold it's own there, too. Stationed in Japan myself for 5 years - didn't even like Japanese food before I went there. My wife is Japanese and we agree, out of all the sushi we've had, this is in the top 3. Top in Arizona bar none.
And the staff.... sit at the bar. Just sit at the bar and enjoy the Kuro Nama beer and prepare to laugh your ass off! Great, great people.
I have been to almost every sushi place in Phoenix and Sakana is the best by far. The size of the fish peices is at least twice as thick as anything SushKo offers which is a distant second (but still a decent place). Sakana prices are in line with everyone else. The place on 59th in North Glendale is the best. The staff is friendly and worth a heavy tip every time I go. After a few visits they get to know you and visit with you each trip.
In the end its how fresh the fish is and how thick they cut it. Nothing else even comes close. Now we cant even eat at the other places in the valley. I have also ate sushi all over the country and in Japan and Sakana is still my favorite place.
If you like sushi and try Sakana it will become your favorite.
I have only been to a few other sushi restaurants in this town but I have traveled extensively in the Northwest where the sushi is plentiful and of the best quality. Sakana's is by far the best I have been to. The restaurant is small so the wait may be long, but it is absolutly worth the wait. Reasons I like Sakana's over the others I have tried; freshness and quality of the food, authenticity and the friendly service is out of this world. If you walk into a sushi bar and you smell fish.. walk out. Fresh fish does not have a fishy smell. Just go and you will see what I mean.
