For over a quarter of a century, this friendly, family-run Middle-Eastern eatery has been serving up some of the Valley's finest regional fare. It's been voted top Middle Eastern restaurant by the both Arizona Republic and Phoenix New Times many times over the years. Simple furnishings and Mediterranean/Middle Eastern artwork and knick-knacks make this a comfortable and cozy dining destination. An outdoor patio provides fair-weather seating. A few menu items include lamb or beef Shish-Kebab, Chicken Shish-Taouk, vegetable combinations (dolmathes, tabbouli, spanikopita, etc.) and Chicken Shwarma.
Byblos used to be one of my family's favorite restaurants. We have been regular customers for close to 20 years. We'd take visitors there, swing by for dinner one Saturday night a month, and celebrate birthdays and graduations there. Staff was sometimes off-putting--they always get very annoyed when you do not show interest in their specials. As a vegetarian family, lamb does not appeal :) But we were always recognized and greeted warmly by the staff. Overall, good food, fun ambiance, a wonderful place for a date or a family dinner.
What has happened to our Byblos? Same staff and owners, as far as I can tell, but when we stopped by recently for our family dinner, we had a very bad experience right at the door. We were there about a half hour after opening, the place was not crowded. One of the gentlemen who runs Byblos walked over, looked us up and down, shook his head, and walked away. We were not dressed like slobs or toting puppies with us. We wondered aloud if he had intentionally snubbed us or just been preoccupied and looking for a good table for our party of 5. Another party walked in and was immediately ushered past us and seated. Our confusion continued. We asked very politely if we could have a table for 5. Again the owner looked at us and walked away. We asked the other owner if they were open for dinner and he said yes. We asked for a table, and he walked away without saying a word.
After being ignored for a good ten minutes (and watching three other parties be promptly seated), we simply walked out the door and went somewhere else. I have no idea what we could have done to offend, I have no idea why Byblos would want to throw away loyal customers. Byblos used to be a Tempe gem, but I will never go there again.
I can't believe this is the same place that has gotten more than one star! Has the ownership changed drastically since 2007? Bottom line, the rudest and saddest excuses for business owners I have EVER seen. Authentic Greek style rudeness. Don't these people know that acting like pompous jerks actually turns people away? Also, their belly dancers are really cheap looking and annoying. STAY AWAY!!!
Unfortunately, this restaurant is not one of which I could recommend. I grew up in the Middle East and eating these traditional dishes, so when I tasted the menu fare it was disappointing!
On a brighter note, the staff was courteous and attentive. However, all in all, I would never send anyone there if they are looking for quality Middle Eastern food.
This place is absolutely wonderful. Probably the best Mediterannean/Lebanese food in the Valley. They have amazing service, you can barely even take a sip of your drink without it being refilled. If you're familiar with this kind of food they will recommend something that you are guaranteed to love. The taboulleh is fantastic, all their salads are wonderful, but they specialize in lamb. Just ask them what they recommend and go for it. You will definitely be happy. Don't forget to try the baklava, it's just perfect. Also, unlike most Middle Eastern restaurants they serve alcohol, combine that with being located on Mill and you've got a great way to start a night out. I can't say enough good things about this place. I took my husband, who is Lebanese, here for his birthday and he left very happy and very full.
A little pricy? Maybe, but I can't say no to their menu.
Starter: Vegeratrian Plate - Hummus, Dolmades, Eggplant dip etc.
Main Entre: Any Lamb or Gyro.
Dessert: Taramisu & Turkish Coffee.
Just go. They are the nicest people and if you like Med. food, Go.
I really hate to give this restaurant a bad review but.....
First of all I have to say the people working at the restaurant were so welcoming and so friendly. If only the quality of their food was half as good as the treatment we received while dining. I believe this was actually the worst Middle Eastern food I've ever eaten and I love eating ethnic cusine.
Absolutley, unequivocally the best Middle Eastern cuisine in Phoenix/Scottsdale. For that matter some of the best Middle Eastern cuisine I have had the pleasure of indulging in, and take it from me I have been all over including Lebanon. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Every dish is prepared with the freshest ingrediants and is bursting with flavor. For delicious authentic meditteranean cuisine that will stimulate your taste buds with the most delightful of flavors, come to Byblos for a true dining experience to be remembered.
We live in South Chandler and have a couple of middle eastern restaurants nearby that aren't very good, so we figured we'd try someplace new.
Byblos is in a run down neighborhood and when you walk in, the place looks older, but you don't even notice once you start eating the wonderful food.
They tell you, when you're ordering, that the tomato soup is to die for, and are they right! The baba ganoush had a great flavor and the chicken was marinated and grilled to perfection.
Byblos also has a large selection of desserts that are so reasonably priced, you can't pass them up. We had the tiramisu and it was delicious!
Because of the food, combined with the attentive service, we're looking forward to going back soon.
