Shimogamo presents the best of Japanese dining experience to Chandler. We feature a full sushi bar and dining area for both families and couples. Our sushi menu is filled with engaging, creative items, fined-tuned for those who are looking for unique and sophisticated fine Japanese dining. Our forte is not just sushi, but also the authentic yet approachable Izakaya-style small dishes that have been crafted by Executive Chef Sanae Otomo. Over the past decade, Shimogamo has been serving our customers with a passion to deliver true Japanese flavors.
Well...we(myself, wife and 12 year old son) went to Shimogamo s on Friday night and arrived at about 5:15pm. We were seated immediately as there were only people at 2 tables. The service was good and we received food and drinks in a timely manner. I would rate the food as above average but not on the great side. I would also tend to agree that even for happy hour the prices are high. The problem we ran into is that the owner came to our table at about 6pm and said we needed to be done by 6:30pm as our table was reserved, at this time the place was slightly full but still a few empty tables but they appeared to be reserved as well. I thought this was rude as we had only been there for 45min and not even done with our food yet. I had also just receive my 2nd beer. At this point we figured we had 30min and would be no problem to finish our food and my beer, we wanted dessert but knew that was out of the question now. Then it got worse, he brought us our check at 6:10pm and said we needed to pay so he could get our table cleaned and ready by 6:30pm, I think from what I saw the people for the table had already arrived. I was not close to finishing my beer, our son was still eating, but basically kicked out. Let me make it clear we had no issues with the service, not rowdy(just chilling), no complaints to anyone during dinner, he just truly wanted us out for the table. I will say I will never be back to this place.
I frequent many sushi bars in the area and I would not recommend this place at all. My usual meal at every sushi restaurant is a chirashi bowl and a spicy tuna roll. A chirashi bowl is a bowl of mixed sashimi on a bed of rice. For me it is always a good way to determine just how good the sushi restaurant because this bowl has almost every type of sashimi you find on their menus - albacore, tuna, salmon, squid, egg, yellowtail, tuna belly, fish eggs, etc.
Now concerning Shimogamo, not only were the portions very small for both the chirashi bowl and the spicy tuna roll, there was absolutely no flavor in the fish, neither did it look fresh. They charge high prices here -the chirashi bowl was $25, the spicy tuna roll was $6.25. The rice in the chirashi bowl was also dry, hard, and not cooked properly to be sushi rice
I would recommend going to Sakana, specifically the location in ahwatukee. Portions are good sized, the fish is fresh, has flavor, and prices are reasonable. A chirashi bowl at Sakana is $16 while a spicy tuna roll is about $6. Also they are always consistent here, which is a huge factor in Japanese restaurants.
If you don't believe give Shimogamo a shot, Sakana in ahwatukee a shot, and then you'll realize how much time, money, and effort you've wasted.
This place is the best in AZ. The owner greets you at the door and is 100% class. One sushi chef in particular, Al, is great to talk to and is highly recommended. The atmosphere is always spotless and all the staff is friendly. LOVE the Japanese cake for dessert!
A Japanese dining in the hot desert town Phoenix? That was the doubt I had walking in to Shimogamo. Words can't describe the authenticity and quality of Shimogamo. I'd say that this is probably the best Japanese restaurant in the Western half of the U.S. And, no I am not making any overstatement. Yes, I have been to other places (not to mention my occasional trips to Tokyo, Japan) but not a single place matched what Shimogamo offers. Drop in and experience the place for yourself. Trust me. This place is the BEST.
