We found this place from a referral and it is the best Mexican food ever.. it has ruined my taste buds for anywhere else. The staff is friendly and the service is great. We will definitely be returning on a regular basis.
This restaurant has gone to hell. Since they changed owners the only thing they have improved is their recycling. So much is recycled; the chips on your table, the rice, the avocado dressing. That’s right, when you have ate you’re food it goes back to the kitchen to be put in a bowl and reserved. Also, I have seen their walk-in, there is mold on almost everything. And when you go back there you are told to pick the best tomato or lemon “The one with the least mold on it”; Quoted from the owner Sylvia. I’m not sure what happened to this restaurant, but I do know they will not be in business for much longer. I have also reported them to the Health dpt for review.
We used to love eating there but ate there last night and it was terrible. Oily chips, poor service, dirty silverware, and mediocre food (at best). You used to have to wait in line for a seat but the place was half empty on a Friday night at 7 pm. We are not likely to return any time soon. Too bad as it is close by and used to be pretty good.
Ate there last night and have been there quite a few times in the past. We were quite surprised to find the place pretty much empty. Even though the sun birds are not back yet, there were only two other tables being served. Our waitress seemed to be more concerned with watching her 12 year old grand daughter run around with a toothpick stuck in her mouth and sitting at the bar talking to the other customer. Not a good image.
We placed our order and waited and waited. Finally we had to ask what happened to our salad. The 12 year old said they forgot what type of dressing we wanted, then came back with a plate that contained a handful of brown iceberg lettuce. Salad? Certainly not. We overheard the other table asking about what happened to their salad as well.
Salsa was 4-alarm hot. I love spicy food but could not eat this it was so hot. That's all they have, nothing mild, just 4-alarm hot. My wife's taco plate did not come with any sour cream or salsa or anything else to put on them. When we asked about that, the 12 year old came back with two different bottles of hot sauce.
My burrito was so spicy hot that the first bite caused me to start choking. It was inedible. Waitress told me there were hot cactus leafs in the burrito! She did ask me if I wanted something else, but it takes so long for the food to come out that I didn't want to wait.
When I told her the recipe changed, she decided the right thing to do was to argue with me about it. Kept telling me this is the way it's always been, and nobody else ever complained. I told her that when I come there, the burrito is what I order, so I know what it tastes like, Did not matter to her, she just argued with me.
Sylvia the cook decided the best way to handle this was to explain how jalepenos are grown and that some are hotter than others. I told her that food prep, especially with fresh ingredients, needs to be tasted before serving. Didn't matter, they just blathered on and on.
Bottom line? Used to be a place for decent, inexpensive Mexican food. Now? Under new management, the place is dirty, both tables and floors, and the food is so spicy hot as to be inedible.
Better to try Los Favoritos, Taco Fiesta, Elvira's, La Raza, Los Gringos Locos, Mi Amigos, Fillibertos, or Taco Bell for Mexican food or one of the 30 odd other restaurants in the area.
I lived in apache junction for a couple years back in the early 2000s. My brother and dad and myself frequented gilberts joint. sylvia and gilbert were two of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. Roy, Shane, and Eric are our names and I just want to say, we miss you guys. YOU HAVE THE BEST BEEF TAQUITOS IN THE SOUTHWEST, BAR NONE.
I went in today with my friends and simply put, it was awful. The service was slow beyond slow.
We have eaten there for years, and while we never consider it a great place to eat, it was always a fair meal in a place where we could get away from the mainstream and eat a quiet and inexpensive meal. It has gradually been getting worse.
Today was awful. Doubt I will ever go back. They were slow taking out order, bringing us refills, bringing us food, actually slow with everything but bringing us our check. One of the water glasses brought to us still had lipstick on it.
The food was way substandard. My chicken wrap was soggy and gross. We ran out of water several times, and repeatedly had to ask for more water.
The staff showed no lack of concern for their apathy, slowness and everything else. For a family owned restaurant it is clear the family does not care at all.
When we were still waiting (a long time) for our food, one of the other groups was leaving and wished us luck and told us we will have have to keep asking them for things. I should have ejected then.
The other group left change for their tip. We left 15% because maybe they can use the money to hire more help.
The best place ever. Food is grate sehrvice has improved and great drinks. I am there almost all the time for the food. I never met or had as good service in my entire life. I would tell any one to try the food.
Service is slow, place is a dump. IF they can get your order right the food's good. But I've been there three times and so far they haven't gotten it right yet. It's a popular place though, so they're doing something right, just not for me.
