Zur Kate German Restaurant
After running the original Zur Kate in Hamburg, Germany for over a decade and a half, Gunter and Irene Krause came to the Valley in the mid-80s and opened this gast haus . The place's name translates to the old smoke house and has the festive feel of a German country inn. The best of the wurst on the menu includes bratwurst, weisswurst, knackwurst plus a wide range of schnitzels and smoked meats (rippchen). Reasonably priced entrees and daily specials are featured in addition to an impressive selection of German beer.
Just finished supper, absolutely delicious. Atmosphere and accordion music plus the food, what an experience!!!! Spaetzlel and red cabbage tasted just as I remember it. Jeger Schnitzel was done to perfection. German rye bread with the meal as expected.
My family ate here tonight and I was really disappointed. The salad bar is really lacking. The choices are bratwurst/sausage, snitzel and pork chops. The German Potato Salad looked like small potatoes but certainly not german potato salad as I know it. The waitress did not even know the menu. If I asked what kind of sausage was used in a dish, she didn't know but did say she didn't like the dish. I can say that the potato dumpling was huge but the gravy was mostly in my cabbage and tasted as if it were from a can. The prices are low but I would rather have selction and atmosphere. It was quiet, no music.
I will try Bavarian restaurant next time as the choices are greater (so are the prices). I guess I got spoiled when we ate at the German restaurant in Flag called Hansel and Gretel but not sure if it is still there or not.
We have been repeat customers here for about two years. You will think you are visiting family in Germany! The best unknown restaurant in the East Valley-Mesa. Be sure to try weekend specials, especially rouladan and goulash. Hands down, this is the best German restaurant in the valley. Plus, the price for food is way too cheap for the quality. Fabulous German beer selection on tap. Live music on the weekend.
