First off, I would like to mention that I have always been the type of person to fully accept mistakes made, misunderstandings, and the typical bad day attitude you sometimes get when you go to a restaurant. I have always prided myself in this mutual understanding and tend to let any of the fore mentioned situations slide. As of yesterday, however, this has changed.
My friends and I decided to go to Mai Thai in downtown Boise for my birthday. I received a $10 certificate in the mail to be used in the month of my birthday and decided it was a great place to dine and relax with my friends. We have been frequenters to the restaurant for happy hour and for their delicious food. We also have partaken in the numerous Living Social deals that Mai Thai is involved with. As we are aware of the disclosure language that presided on the bottom of both certificates (we are CPAâs), we made sure to mention to the waiter that we intended to use these certificates for our dinner that evening. His immediate reaction was to tell us that they could not be used in combination with any other offer or promotion, which included happy hour. We were happy to oblige.
We then proceeded to order our food and ate it. I do have to mention that since the last time we were there, which was about 3 months prior, the serving sizes were about half the size they were before but I suppose that is beside the point. Anyway, when we went to pay, we included our certificates with our bills. My friends with their living social and myself with the $10 birthday certificate. We then were approached by the owner of the restaurant and told that these certificates could not be used at the same table. Even though we were paying separately; which would have been the case whether we had certificates or not. The owner proceeded to yell at us that he could not accept them, even though we mentioned we had done this before in the restaurant with no issues, and that that information was not stated on the certificates that we had. We also mentioned that we had discussed this with the waiter prior to our ordering of the food and that they needed to honor the certificates. The owner of Mai Thai then proceeded to scream at our waiter and refused to accept them. He actually threw my $10 birthday certificate at me, grabbed my bill and credit card, and continued to charge me the full amount! I have never been so insulted in my life! Especially by the owner of a local business that I was trying to support. If he felt that he was in some way being cheated by the use of these certificates, then he should not participate in them.
Unfortunately, this experience has made me realize that I need to voice the situation we experienced, so that others may be warned of this shady business in our Treasure Valley. I will never go back there. My business will go elsewhere.
