Mill Steaks & Spirits
Serving dinner six days a week, this restaurant offers upscale dining and a comfortable atmosphere. The steaks are the showstopper here, but the menu also includes seafood, poultry and tasty side items.
The Mill was my favorite. The quality of the steaks and ribs have gone down hill. There prices have gone up. The dining room is so dark you can't see your food. From the taste, I am sure the lighting is dim for a reason. Don't waste your time Go to Steamers instead. The parking lot is always empty at the Mill. Get the hint owners............quality way down, prices up........ NO THANKS!!!
The Mill House are thieves..... My wife and I ate there, I had the ribs she had the prime rib. When our meal came my ribs were raw on the inside, so we sent them back.. waitress brought them back to me and they were still raw on the inside, I was told they couldn't cook them anymore. And we explained from the beginning to the waitress, that we do not like our meat rare we like it well done. So she brought me out a piece of prime rib instead, and it was raw. This dinner was the worst dinner I have ever eaten at any restaurant, they still charged me for my ribs and the prime rib, they stole $75.00 from me. Because that is what they charged me for this rotten meal.
I think we should all get together and file a small claims suit against the Mill steakhouse for not providing us with the product we payed for.
The two best restaurants in McCall ID are The Mill and Steamers. To compare them, we decided to eat at both on consecutive nights. And I post this double review under both properties.
The Mill is an old, established restaurant with a grand history. It has a long, distinguished track record in fine dining. The wine list is above average. There is ample parking. We went Valentine’s Day and had 7 pm reservations. The place was swamped and we were seated 40 minutes late, but there were comfortable waiting areas near the bar around a blazing fireplace. Service was good, considering the holiday. We had prime rib (which was very nice and not overdone), plus a ribeye steak (which was a bit overdone and had a strange streak of gristle running through it). The salad was excellent. The baked potato was huge. Vegetables were OK. Ordering wine was cumbersome because the waitress has to wait for the bartender to bring it out. Dinner for two ran well over $100, and that is more than it was worth any time but Valentines. All in all, this was the second best meal in McCall.
Steamers (www.SteamersRestaurant.com) is located downtown at the big curve. Parking might be a challenge sometimes. The place was empty, as would be expected the day after a holiday. Service was quick, professional, and friendly. The wine list was quite good and we selected a previously-unknown South African vintage. One of the specials was the pate terrine, and we found it to be most excellent – world class. And we recommend the pear and walnut salad as a great change from tossed greens. As the name implies, most of the restaurant specials feature ocean fish or shellfish. Instead, we chose Idaho rainbow trout and lamb. Both dishes were expertly prepared and the spicing enhanced the dish rather than covering it up. This was by far the best meal in McCall and at two thirds the price of The Mill. It was also the second best meal we had in Idaho, right behind the prestigious Sun Valley Lodge. I agree with most of the posters here that Steamers is your best local choice. The chef knows his stuff.
I meet my friends from boise at the mill they said its the best place in town for great steaks prime rib and seafood ,and i would agree . my prime rib was the best i had ever had,my lady friend had scollops, loved them. the service was friendly and accommodating we all had a wonderful time. After dinner we all headed next door to beside the mill , wow thats were the locals hang out ,there was pool, shuffle board, darts, foosball, great music,we had a blast. It was nice being close to our hotels so we could walk back to our rooms after having a few to many . I can see why the mill and beside have been a favorite with all my friends over the years,Its what going to Mccall is all about.
The mill is probably the longest standing restaurant in McCall, but this doesnt mean they know how to satisfy their customers. Im suprised they didnt serve a steak knife with the salad, condsidering you needed to saw through the uncut carrot sticks that were a mile long. The wine list was pathetic though there was a full bar. I could cover each meal and their downfalls, but take my advice Steamers is the way to go. They have everything from ribeyes and tenderloin to crab legs, salmon, halibut, scampi, scallops, lamb....they have it all. Even a sushi type appetizer to please any palate.
Will NEVER go back. $24 for a 6oz flavorless prime rib. Only the aus juice and horseradish made the meat edible. My husband 10$ filet was 32 and only slightly better. Denny quality food at NY Hilton prices. Should have know when there was only 1 car in the parking lot at 5:30.
Go to Steamers - food is plated beautifully, dinners are flavorfull, and with food this good the prices are pretty resonable.
We are from California & it was our first visit to McCall, Idaho. We thought it would be nice to go out & have a great steak. This place was sooooo over priced! Not to mention I had a piece of leather not steak! I left there so upset I payed 90.00 for crap! The salad was warm, the broc. was burnt from the heat lamp, then the steak, I could not even cut it! I am not joking my husband & I hated our experience. Don't go. There are other choices in McCall.
They price their steaks like they should be in a Manhattan steakhouse but they only serve USDA Choice meat. Perhaps if they served USDA Prime meat I would've understood the prices but not for something I can get at my local grocery store. Anyhow, in all fairness I didn't actually have any of their steaks so they may have been tasty but the prices prevented me from even trying some. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed and the food is still pretty good. I'd probably eat there again.
