Pretensions of victorian elegance

If ever you want to see what the lack of market forces do in terms of quality and service, this place makes it clear. Anywhere else, healthy competition between hotels and dining vendors keeps prices reasonable and quality high. Here, as I understand it, a US Gov chosen vendor runs most all the hotel/dining options within park boundaries. The result: both lodging and dining choices are quite pricey, and the quality in most cases is mediocre. The Lake Hotel restaurant is a good case in point. Nicely dressed waiters/waitresses and elegantly presented food, but the quality of nearly every item on the menu (we tried most everything over several days), was dreadful.
Pity, since the location is still beautiful.
