Union an American Bistro
The cozy, upbeat UNION is the epitome of a friendly neighborhood restaurant, inviting locals and visitors to enjoy the modern American culinary experience. UNION offers creative, seasonal menus served in a warm and comfortable setting in the heart of downtown Castle Rock, using quality ingredients from around the block and around the world.
My Husband & I waited a few years while Union got their act together, and I'm SO GLAD we did!!
So far this is our new dinner place to take our out-of-town guests (outside of Landry's). Very friendly staff - Great wine list - Pork Chops are the best and if they have SCALLOPS on the menu, do your best not to miss it!!!
A bit on the pricier side so be prepared. I've seen kids there, and they were very well mannered, not a place to let them roam free. They have a good size Bar Area to eat & watch sports - very fun crowd!!
I really want to love Union, but it always falls short of being excellent. The things they do well, they knock out of the park. The things that they don't do well, they strike out completely.
On the positive side, their food is generally very good with a very few exceptions. On the negative side, they have a lot to learn about ambiance and service...a LOT to learn.
The pork chop is truly a work of art. It is absolutely delicious. It is the shining star on the menu, by far. The ahi tuna appetizer is very good, as is the tenderloin flat bread. The calamari and salads are well above average.
Stay away from the thai flatbread. It's so salty, it's inedible. I have a sneaking suspicion that they rely pretty heavily on thai sweet chili sauce from a bottle in this dish, as well.
The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired for the caliber of restaurant Union wants to be. It is not in line with the price and overall quality of the food.
The wait staff and on floor management are extremely intrusive. My husband and I could barely have a conversation without constant interruption the last time we went there. He was asked 3 times whether or not he was enjoying his main course before he could even take a bite.
I'm all for friendly service, but there's a line between friendly and intrusive and Union doesn't seem to have the foggiest notion where that line is. At a finer restaurant, as I would consider Union to be, you should not even notice your wait staff.
Finally, I don't go to fine restaurants to listen to my favorite top 40 hits playing loudly in the background. I mean, come on! Put together a mix CD of music that aligns with the feel of the restaurant - maybe some funky jazz, American standards, even classic rock, if that's what you're going for. Don't just throw on your favorite radio station and call it a day.
It balances out to a good restaurant, but not the great one they want (or are priced) to be.
Even as good as the pork chop is, I very seriously doubt I'll ever get my husband to go back after paying $150 to be tormented relentlessly by the staff to the tune of Britney Spears' latest hit. Maybe for lunch, when you'd expect a more casual atmosphere and a lower price.
Union is a wonderful addition to downtown Castle Rock. The ambience is warm and inviting. The wine list is great and reasonably priced. The food is amazing--really unique flavor pairings and gorgeous presentation. The desserts are to-die-for--if you don't have the chocolate chip cookie tart you are missing out! I love that this place with a LoDo vibe is right in my neighborhood, and so affordable! The only issue is that the service can be inconsistent. I wish they'd stay open later and open on Sundays, too.
Union an American Bistro is in the building that used to be Pinos. The 6 partners that opened this chic eatery make fantastic desserts and main entrees. Its like going to LODO but right in the middle of Castle Rock.
The site was originally the Rocky Mountain Brewing Company, but owner John Good changed the name in the 1860s to
the Tivoli, in honor of the gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark. Now it serves as a student center for the ...
