Sushi Sake Japanese Cuisine

Description

Just northwest of downtown, located in Gateway Square, is one of the newest additions to a growing population of sushi restaurants in Austin. The decor is simple and modern in design, with muted browns and tans filling the color scheme. The ambiance from day to night is quite different. Daytime hours offer a casual atmosphere for business meetings or quick lunches. In the evening, candles light the dining area creating a relaxed environment. The curved sushi bar seats more than just a handful of people and the sushi chefs enjoy conversing with customers. If you do not see a sushi roll you are interested in on the menu, discuss what you are looking for with the sushi chefs and they will try to accommodate your needs. There is also an extensive Japanese menu, including a separate vegetarian section.

Not sure what has changed, from reading the old reviews, but Sushi Sake is one of my favorite places to eat for lunch. I have tried several other places with similar menu items and keep coming back. The chefs are always friendly and willing to take special orders. The food is always the freshest tasting, with clean accommodations. And the prices are very reasonable for sushi depending on what you order.

Sushi Sake

Great, fresh sushi at decent prices. This place is hardly packed but definitely worth stopping in for their rolls. Be sure to try the "Spicy Susan" or "Spicy Carlos" rolls that are not on the menu. You won't regret it!

First of all, I was regular customer when this restaurant just opened.Always recommed to people who want to try Japanese food. Friday night, My husband, another couple and myself, decided to go that restaurant. when we got there, the restaurant was about half full, and there was a 15 mins wait. Waiting was at the bar, which happened to be the entrance,, too tight !!!! Hostess ,, she never smile, just walk herself and leave the menu. What kind of restaurant do that !! About the Food,,,, the reason we went there was " Sukiyaki" which is they don't serve on Fri and Sat because they are busy,," Kasu Don "was nasty. it taste like they fry it 2 hours before(disgusting !!) suppose to come with cabbage but it wasn't. I explain to the waitress and said I want cabbage,,she argue with me and said that is Japanese syle ( and I know that "Kasu Don" was not the Japanese style., and I should know i was born in Japan. and I remember first time when they opened, they served fresh Kasu Don,rice, cabbage and yummy sauce. Sushi was not fresh. In conculusion Service was bad, along with food and for this will certaly for last !!! I will never !! never !! go back that restaurant.

We eat at Sushi Sake fairly regularly. It is one of our preferred lunch spots. We have found the service to be consistently accomodating and the offerings diverse, including items not listed on the menu such as the Spicy Susan and Spicy Carlos rolls that keep us coming back. We have never had an issue with the quality of the food and enjoy the quiet atmosphere and traditional touches provided by the staff in the way of greetings.

Moldy sushi and ill-mannered manager
By ellie, 12/5/07
DO NOT EAT AT SUSHI SAKE. The quality of food is bad; the store manager is really ill-mannered and doesn't value customers. I had lunch with my friends at Sushi Sake last Friday. The lunch menu one of my friends got wasn't served in right way. The ginger was all mixed up with wasabi and other foods were arranged in a little awkward way. We hoped that the taste would have been able to compensate for the poor appearance. But the taste was even worse. She told us that a sushi she just had tasted something moldy and spat it out. She called the store manager and explained the whole situation. You know what? To my surprise, he never said 'sorry' to her and tried to change only the parts of the dish she complained about. I've never seen any restaurant or waitress/ waiter/ even STORE MANAGER respond toward a customer's complaint like that. His arrogant attitude showed that he considered her complaint as a false - accusation to get a new fresh food, or something like that. A few moments later, she had another chance to point out his ill-mannered attitude. And I couldn't believe my ears when I heard what he said to her. "If you don't like it, don't come back." What kind of manager is he? How could he treat customers like that? Yes! We won’t come back ever again. And tell this story all around. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY FOR POOR QUALITY FOOD AND BAD SERVICE.

horrible service at sushi sake
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/4/07
My friends and I went to lunch at Sushi Sake and had the same bad experience as the commentor above. We ordered their lunch specials and waited for our meals. 45 mins passed and we are still waiting for our meals. We asked our waitress if the order is ready and she apologized for the delay and told us she will check with the sushi chefs. She came back and informed us the chefs are still working on the meals and she apologized again for the delay. Since our lunch break was almost over we asked if we can have our order to go. The waitress complied and told us it would not take much longer. Another 15 mins passed and we decided to cancel our order and head back to the office. It was then the manager told us the sushi chefs had already prep the food and we need to wait for them to finish our order. We told the manager we needed to go and we want to cancel our orders. He ignored us and walked off talking to another waitress. We decided to talk to our waitress again explaining to her do not wish to wait for our order any longer and we will pay for our drinks and leave. It was then the sushi chefs called to her and handed her our order in to-go boxes. We reluctantly took our order and paid out. Of course, we were not given any relief on our bill. On top of that not once did the manager apologize for his rudeness or for the long wait for our food. The sushi in the to-go boxes tasted horrible. It was fishy and warm....pretty disgusting. I threw mine away as I do not wish to get sick from bad sushi. Needless to say my friends and I have been boycotting Sushi Sake ever since.

This is my favorite restaurant in Austin. The best sushi rolls are off the menu. Order the Spicy Carlos, or the Spicy Susan. You'll never look at sushi the same again!! Fantastic place!

Slow service, not-so-good food
By Chong L, 9/26/05
It was actually quite a nice place to eat maybe a year ago, but the last two visits were both disappointing and have not gone back since. Don't even have Tempura Udon on the menu. Food was never spectucular, but combine with bad service, sorry you lost.
