The folks that work there are not the nicest people in the world, in fact they are downright rude. They are like most of the locals, bring your money out here, drop it off and leave. I hate to say that but its true. I think they have gotten used to tourists spending lots of cash and then going home. Not to mention you'd have to drive 23 miles to fredericksburg to get gas or corn. So to save a little money and time I go there. I can say though if I lived there or if they were in my neighborhood at home i would not give them a penny of my money. The world does not revolve around Doss tx with the exception of Deer season.
Where else can you get a $20 burger for $6? Everything is made from scratch. It is American-owned and operated, the employees speak English, if you go there, this one place you will want to buy a T-shirt. Finally someone designed one with something decent and truthful on the sleeves. Their feed is always fresh and even though the fuel isn't as cheap as it is in the cities, it is convient to have out in the middle of nowheres.
The closest town to Doss, Tx. is Harper, about 14 miles southeast of there. We have a hunting lease near Doss, and are so glad the store is there to keep us from having to travel a long way to grab things we run out of or anything that we might need. They are friendly and reasonable on prices and also help us out during the off season with supplemental feeding for the deer. We hope they will always be there.
Our deer lease is about seven miles north of the Doss Country Store, and we have been doing business there since they opened in 2002. The food there is excellent, especially the chicken fried steak, they have a good selection of feed, ranching and hunting supplies, and you will not find friendlier people providing a much needed service to the whole area.
My husband & I happened upon this clean little cafe while out riding our motorcycle. We initially stopped in for something cold to drink, but after seeing they offered food we decided to give it a try.
My husband had a cheeseburger, which he said was good, but I tried a chicken fried steak sandwich & it was scrumptious. The lady who took our order, also did the cooking and was kind enough to answer any questions we sent her way. We definitely will make it a point to stop at Doss Country Store on a fairly regular basis. Oh, it might help to know that the prices are quite reasonable.
