Auslander Restaurant, Fredericksburg

I last tried Auslander a dozen years ago. It wasn't very good. Tried it again today. Nothing has changed. Unlike other people, I found the staff to be the best part. The green salad was wilted enough to be getting black edges. The German potato salad was out of a can. The sauerkraut was canned or bottled or bagged. The wurst was Opa's, which is good, but you can get it at the grocery. For cheese on the snack plate, they take two deli slices out of a package and cut them in half on the diagonal. The rolls are fresh and good--except for them, the place doesn't cook--it warms up prepared food. I much prefer Friedhelms, where the schnitzel will leave you begging for mercy.

Terrible- Steer Clear. Went just this weekend with my inlaws and sisters family. We went at 3pm when the place was not crowded. We were told the only way to sit inside was to wait for 40 minutes. We were starving- and so we agreed to sit outside under the fans in 97 degree weather. My father in law noticed that there was a table inside that would have sat all of us and asked to be moved there- but they said no. Again, we didnt think too much of it- until later in the meal when members from our party (me included) went to use the restroom and noticed that there were over 7 empty tables inside with NO other patrols waiting tobe seated. Twice i overhead the hostess telling other unsuspecting patrons they could be seated outside right away or wait for 40 min for a table inside. I busted them twice and they reluctantly sat the other parties inside. The food was just ok. Hard to take a german place seriously with mexican food on the menu. I wont be going back.

My wife and I passed through Fredericksburg last night and had orginally decided to stop at Bejas Grill there on Main. But, after being treated very rudely, we left and ended up at Auslander. I have to say, I wasn't sure I would like all the German food, but I do attend Wurstfest in New Braunfels every year, so I thought I'd give it a try. We were VERY pleasantly surprised! My wife had the Schnitzel, potato pancakes, and spatzel...I had the Kasewurst, mashed potatoes, and saurkraut (sp?). It was fantastic! Heck, we didn't even know exactly what we were ordering, but it turned out great! If you like German food...not that I'm an expert...but I would highly recommend the Auslander restaurant! The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was awesome. We can't wait to go back!

Get the beer battered mushrooms and the ruben! We've made a regular habit of getting it when we visit Fredericksburg. Service has always been good to us, and I like the mix of inside or outside seating!

Ok but not great Was there on 2/27/09. I had the Opa sausage which was good but companion had the Renben that had soggy bread. The German Potato salad was just like my mother used to make, right out of the can.

The Auslander is my favorite place in Fredericksburg. Great food, great beer, great music. Newly remodeled dining room is fantastic (especially when they have a fire in the fireplace!) and the biergarten is always lively and festive. We have eaten just about everywhere in Fredericksburg (we are locals) and in my opinion it is the best restaurant. Sometimes the service is not A+, but if you spend much time in Fredericksburg you will see that that is generally the case just about everywhere, so don't make a judgement on ANY restaurant in Fredericksburg due to a single poor experience with service. We have eaten at The Auslander probably 40 times and had great service all but a few times. Try a Jagerschnitzel or one of their fantastic steaks (they won't cost you $40) and any of their numerous beers! They have live music all the time and some really big-names quite often. I hope you find this helpfull. My wife and I eat out quite often, and we just love to go to Auslander!

I recently went to auslander and am sad to say i will not be returning. I waited for 30 minutes with employees hustling past me. We sat inside and the food was actually okay, the staff however is a different story. We had decided after our meal to drink a few drinks and listen to the music. Your bartender was miserable. I have never in my life seen someone who works on tips treat customers the way she did. I will never return based horse mouths' nasty attitude alone.

I am new here to fredericksburg, but the auslander was great, i would recomend it . the service is good, the food is real good, I'll defanintly go back.

Just returned from a delightful trip to Fredericksburg. Our only disappointment was the Auslander Restaurant!!!!! The only thing authentically german there, were the cuckoo clocks on the wall and the beer steins displayed in the cases!!!! It would be a good place to go for the young drinkers, but NOT for german food!!! Had better at Wheelers for lunch. German cooks would be appalled, as they are proud of their cooking. Only 3 or 4 german wines on the wine list and only a few german beers listed also. We had the americanized version of weinerschnitzel that was truly awful. The spatlze was so bad we couldnt eat it (all stuck together). Potato pancakes or what THEY called them were very disappointing, as we were looking forward to those the most. Don't even think of german desserts. They feature home made pies, mostly. Did you ever have a pie in Germany!! I think not. Black forest cake? not on their menu. Delicious german cheesecake (kasesanekuchen) they never heard of it. Service was fair at the most. The whole experience was disappointing and there's no way I could recommend going there.
