Don't understand all the good reviews. Just returned from my first and last visit. The food was horrible! I had the meatloaf, which tasted and looked like a salisbury steak from a $2.50 frozen dinner meal. The mashed potatoes were just as bad - suspect they originated in a box rather than homemade. The green beens and okra were overcooked (mushy) and tasteless. My wife had the fish, which was undercooked and pink. Even the tea had a disgusting metallic taste. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
This place is awesome! I am an East Texas Native, and honestly, I wasn't expecting to be able to find good soul food this far south in Texas after I moved here, but I am here to say eating here reminded me of being back home in East Texas having dinner after church. It is truly home cooked food and I would recommend it to anyone.
My wife and I went there today about 2:30 pm. The food had a good flavor but was room temperature at best. I had been wanting to try the fried chicken but, they only had wings and thighs left, so I chose the turkey and dressing, my wife had the meatloaf. I will give them one more try.
What day did you guys eat at Mr & Mrs G's!? My wife and I were there just a few days ago and to say the least we were NOT impressed. Although the food was sitting under a heat lamp, when we set down and began to eat, everything was cold. I couldn't decide whether to finish my meal or to box it up to take home to microwave and finish it. The best part of the whole meal was the Kool-aide. I'll certainly put this place on the last on my list for repeat returns. Unless the rest of you out there like cold food, I'd say eat somewhere else.
The food is awesome. I tried it once and went back the next day because it was soo good. I would recommend this place to all of my friends and family. I could barely finish a one meat and three veggie plate. I would have gotten dessert but I was too full. The price is very reasonable. A large tea and a one meat three veggie meal is under $9.00.
While in San Antonio you need to eat at this place. My girlfriend has been after me to go and eat there everytime I come to San Antonio, so this past week that I was there we headed to this restaurant. It was awesome! My favorite foods, all homemade, the sweet potato pies, blackeyed peas, okra, cabbage, southern fried chicken, pork chops in a sauce that keeps you licking your fingers, deep fried catfish, yams, ham hocks, meat loaf, green beans, and just so many other foods that was so delicious. Can't wait to go back and eat some of their turkey and dressing. I had some fried chicken, blackeyed peas, orkra, yams, and a slice of sweet potato pie and corn bread. Very good!
Not unusual for the line to go out the door and onto the sidewalk. Well worth the wait! Come with an empty stomach...you will want to eat everything you see. Food is served cafeteria style and is mouthwatering good. The desserts are exceptional but the main meal is so good, you will probably need to take your dessert to go and eat it later.
