Description

A San Antonio institution, this authentic German deli in the heart of downtown has been serving business people and tourists alike since 1917. Known for its delicious deli fare of corned beef, chicken salad, reubens and braunschweiger sandwiches, this is an excellent place to stop in for lunch or dinner. Don't forget to wash your meal down with some of the special Schilo's root beer or top it off with the signature cherry cheesecake. A popular spot, the dining room fills quickly.

Wonderfully consistent
By ,
We loved the ambience, the prices and consistency of Schilo's. I went when Joske's was still on the corner and we'd go look at their huge Christmas display in the windows. That always included a trip to Schilo's for pie and root beer. Thanks for staying so wonderful all these years.

Great place

This is one place that has remained constant over the years. I know I will be satisfied every time I eat there. LOVE the split pea soup and the root beer.

Wonderful old world Deli. Great soups, cold cuts. Deserts. Only problem is that the place closes too early. Wish it was open all night. Service is OUTSTANDING!

Waited 5 min. for wait staff !!!
By ,
My husband and I dine here every so often (I work downtown) and we really like it. I was excited to go today because their Thursday special is chicken and dumplings but we sat down and waited five minutes for wait staff that never came. After a couple of minutes I tried to flag down a server but he rushed past as I attempted to ask him who our server would be. I tried again to ask a female server about someone helping us and she too mostly brushed us off. Give me a break! I only get an hour for lunch and while five minutes doesn't seem like a long wait, please consider that the nearest parking lot is a multi-level lot next door. We walked out...

Going back.
By ,
My friend invited me for my first visit today, I think to ANY German Deli. Wanted something light (and safe as this was my first visit) so tried the chicken salad, yes on croissant. The hearty helping of chicken on a SOFT/FRESH croissant was perfect for lunch. During our short wait I absorbed the place, the furniture, watched the staff interact, and reviewed the menu in better detail. Now, I cannot wait to go back to try Chicken/Dumplings, and if that is as good as I think it will be, I'm likely to make a third visit and branch into something more daring - not sure what yet.

From a San Antonio ex-pat
By ,
As a native San Antonian, this is one of the places I make a point to go to when in San Antonio visiting family and also recommend to friends who go for conventions or vacations. Ditto the recommendation on the hot mustard! The jars are large but can last you *years* because you have to use so little to get the full effect. Great when you've got sinus-trouble! Cheesecake and root beer great, too!

A great spot on the river.

Great food, fast service and great prices make this a place to eat while downtown. And the split pea soup is still to die for. Almost as good as mine. That's a compliment indeed.
