Description

A San Antonio institution, this authentic German deli in the heart of downtown has been serving business people and tourists alike since 1917. Known for its delicious deli fare of corned beef, chicken salad, reubens and braunschweiger sandwiches, this is an excellent place to stop in for lunch or dinner. Don't forget to wash your meal down with some of the special Schilo's root beer or top it off with the signature cherry cheesecake. A popular spot, the dining room fills quickly.

Great homemade root beer a must try! I ate the submarine sandwich toasted with German potatoes; it was good nothing spectacular about it. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant had a nice historical look to it.

Awesome place! I was in San Antonio this week and ate twice at Schilo's. The food was great and very reasonably priced. The first time it was the potato pancakes with applesauce. The next day I had bratwurst with red cabbage. The menu has many items that I would love to try including the split pea soup. I didn't have the root beer but my friend did and she said it was wonderful. Unfortunately, I'm unlikely to make it back to San Antonio anytime soon but if I do, I would head straight to Schilo's

My favorite place in Texas to eat lunch. The food is delicious and the service is good. I love the old atmosphere of the place.

I ate there twice during my visit to San Antonio. The chicken and dumplins was fantastic! Also, the carot salad was off the charts and would love to have the recipe!!!

I've been going there since the early '70s. Went through Lackland and found this place on town pass. Dragged three friends away from the McDonalds mindset. Had the Ruben, coffee and cheesecake and I was sold. Have brought back the cheesecake and mustard to IL, IA, NE, CO, AR, and TN to great acclaim. Their homemade rootbeer is especially good(and a full selection of the real brew is available.) Try not to be in a hurry if you're attempting a weekday lunch. I've seen a line winding around the building. It's a perfect spot to relax from a Saturday riverwalk excursion.

Visited Schilo's Deli the day after Xmas - had to wait till the day we were returning home to Chicago as they were closed Xmas Eve and Xmas Day. Worth the wait - had breakfast and all five of our meals were great. Very good potato pancakes - tried their cobbler and it was excellent. Juice came in chilled mugs - nice touch. Their meats in the deli and the rest of the menu made me wish we could stay for other meals. We actually drove past after 11:00am (when their homemade root beer was done) to get some for the road. The best root beer I have ever tasted.
