Casa Rio

Description

Casa Rio was the first restaurant on the River Walk and is still a must if you have never eaten riverside. With colorful decor, inside and outside seating and a prime location for people-watching, this restaurant is a favorite among both tourists and locals. Add potent, thirst-quenching margaritas, waitresses bustling about in Mexican sun dresses and Mexican favorites such as enchiladas and tamales and you have the makings of the classic Tex-Mex dining experience. Because no reservations are taken and this is a hot spot, you may want to arrive a little early to avoid long lines.

I have news for you all. I have worked on the Riverwalk for a long time. The food for the majority of these restuarants comes from the same major suppliers like Sysco. You aren t eating anything special when you eat on the Riverwalk.

Casa Rio is a truly outstanding Tex-Mex restaurant. Of the four staples of Tex-Mex cooking -- tamales, chili, enchiladas, and tacos -- Casa Rio is among the best in the world in each. Servings are large and heavy on the meat. Yet prices are quite low, particularly considering the prime location right on the Riverwalk. The place is always crowded and wait times may exceed 30 minutes. Be patient. It's worth it. Casa Rio is more food oriented than alcohol oriented. So many other Riverwalk eateries have gone to being bars that also serve food.

We loved this place, the food was authentic, homemade, locally owned Not a CHAIN Restaurant!! (as many are now on the Riverwalk). Very affordable!! If you want to experience quality, fun atmosphere, and local flavor, you will find it here!! LOVED it!!!

In short, staff was rude and overall service was terrible. Talked to manager and he could have cared less. Food was mediocre. I left a four dollar tip on a 67 dollar tab. I should have left less...

Casa Rio was our first dining experience while at a convention in San Antonio. We loved the atmosphere and our waiter was very animated and fun. They were extremely busy so our service was not the best but good considering. The food was very good, not the best Tex-Mex I've had but definitly worth a return visit. I felt the value was exceptional and would reccomend Casa Rio to anyone visiting San Antonio.

I dont know what these people are talking about. This place is Terrible! The food was horrible. It was cheap mexican food that looked like it had either been heated up in the microwave or been on a heat lamp to keep the food warm in large quantities.Im from Houston and eat Mexican all the time, i would have rather ate McDonalds or had a Mexican Lean Cuisine then to eat here again. The chips and salsa were cold. They never came to give my table fresh chips, at every mexican establishment i have ever been to as soon as you are almost done they give you a chip refill. The service was terrible and the food came out about 5 minutes after my table ordered. My friend literally ordered then went to the restroom, by the time she got back her lunch was sitting on the table. When walking into this place i knew it was a mistake by how the other patrons food looked. If you are on vacation and want GOOD authentic mexican food, go elsewhere. This place is for people that dont know what good mexican food is. A a more positive note, the establishment seemed clean and welcoming. Just dont eat here.

Overall I would give Casa Rio a B. While the food is not the greatest, for the price its a good deal because you can eat right by the riverwalk and get a great view. The staff is polite, and I have visited several times. I would recommend the Chile Relleno. Definitely stay away from the tortillas, not even the ducks want them. The Borracho Beans are pretty good and I am not sure why people say they taste like canned, because I didn't think so.

Not very good. The Pollo Asado was not anything special. The salsa was very fresh and had a good spiciness to it though. Didn't see what all the hype was about. Plus, the tortilla soup was not great at all. It was basically almost like if someone opened a can of Campbell's chicken soup and put white cheese, a slice of guacamole, and the tortilla chips on the plate it came on. I had to put some salsa in it to make it spicy.

I always go back to this restaurant because of the great location, great food and friendly service. The prices are the best you will find on the river walk and much better tasting than the other mexican restaurants on the river walk. They have their own parking lot right behind the restaurant and on the receipt there is a stub for free parking and that is a huge plus. I've eaten there about 10 times and my food was never cold or hard. I will continue to eat here again and again whenever I'm downtown.
