Freebirds World Burrito
A hallmark with the local college kids searching for cheap, filling food, Freebirds offers huge burritos with a vibrant atmosphere and a quick turnaround. Located between Rice University, Upper Kirby and Montrose, Freebirds welcomes all comers interested in finding a custom made burrito big enough to satisfy for two or three days. Steak, chicken breast, dark meat chicken, black beans, ranchero beans, cilantro, death sauce and more can all be found on your tortilla. If you are feeling adventurous try the super monster and have them add barbecue sauce. But don't expect to want to eat for at least a week.
I LOVE Freebirds. I have gotten my husband addicted and my 8 yr old. Still working on the 3 yr old! I first ate it in College Station while in college. When pregnant with my 8 yr old (pre-Houston establishments), my husband and I would drive to CS just to eat a burrito! We would travel to Dallas and to Longview (east Texas) via College Station to get a burrito. We have loved the bad ass BBQ, but just recently it has been changed at the Clear Lake store and the Shepherd store. PLEASE BRING BACK THE AWESOME BAD ASS BBQ sauce. The stuff now tastes like KC or something store bought. Not good. But the burritos are still AWESOME!!
Their burritos are The bomb, blk bns, mxd chss, stk, grld vgtbl, queso, pico de gallo, xtra cilantro and if u have not tried it u must have a bowl of their blk bean soup. Remember BLACK BEAN SOUP !!! btw their kick a$$ bbq sauce is good too, To be honest i always take a bunch of those little cups and keep some in my fridge at home.
This review is going to start out crappy, but end delicious. Bear with me now...
I've been a longtime Freebirds junkie (at several locations in Tejas), but will most likely never return to the Houston Freebirds Shepherd location due to a specific employee.
Her name is Ashley (last name, no clue) and she has been repeatedly brash and inappropriate in hitting on my guy when we've been there. Like, to the extent where we simply do not eat there anymore. It's uncomfortable and just disgusting (and kind of sad?? hello?? you're at work?? we're here to eat burritos?? he's taken??).
A crappy way to begin a review for a place I love to eat at, but seriously -- ladies, I would advise you and your man just avoiding this girl. She's poison and obviously a little off. Hopefully she'll be headed out soon and the Freebirds world will be well again. Icky.
Now for positive things - I love the burritos at Freebirds. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Everything is incredibly fresh, their choice of tortillas is always nice and their salsa/hot sauce is always just right.
The price is just so right (lunch usually under $8 for me) and their burrito sizes are great and scale to what meals I accidentally skipped earlier in the day ( life is busy, it happens). My daughter loves their kiddo meals and even with her unholy appetite walks away satisfied.
Beyond weird employee situations, this is/was one of the most welcome texmex comfort food spots in Houston. The fact that it is next door to Amy's Ice Cream just makes it that much more perfect :)
If you like Mexican food with a kick, check out Freebird's World Burrito. I had never heard of Freebird's until I went out with some friends from church one night, and I was hooked. You can make you own burrito right before your eyes and each one is very good. I can only eat a monster, but it's huge. The supermonster looked like the monster little brother and it is great. Must see if you plan to go out on a weekend.
Best thing that ever came out of College Station. Freebirds allows to you customize your own burrito down to what kind/size of tortilla you want. The combos are limitless and so are the levels of yummy. The meat is flavorful and tender, the veggies are fresh and the sauces are delicious!
There is one opening up on the NW side fo Houston on 1960 near Willowbrook Mall! Hooray!
this place is excellent this was my first job the reason i am the chef that i am today this place have everything you can ask for in a restaurant and more even has a crab shanty if that is all you want is crabs and everything in between nice quiet not too much noise everyone there is friendly and courteous no crazy waiting prompt service and all around nice environment for the fam and couple alike
The line is cafeteria style so you get your food almost instantly. Good selection. Great burritos and quesadillas. You can also call in an order to be picked up. Indoor and outdoor seating, but somewhat limited.
