Description

This great neighborhood Thai cafe makes you feel right at home. The establishment is a favored hole-in-the-wall among regulars who have discovered this gourmet Thai restaurant right in their own neighborhood. Colorful Asian wall decorations and pictures, offset by live and silk plants give a peacefully casual ambiance to your dining experience. The clientele consists of families and couples alike. The tantalizing aroma of curry and garlic welcomes you to Toys Cafe. Specialties include Thai iced tea, Eggplant and Tofu in Thai Green Curry, Coconut Milk, and Fresh Squid Salad with Thai herbs. The menu also sports a variety of beer and wine choices.

I've seen Toy's reviewed in D magazine for years and I FINALLY stopped by. I had the Japanese Eggplant in green curry sauce with deep fried tofu and it was delicious! Dinner was hours ago yet... I am still thinking about it... it was that good. My portion was a little meager but It was just enough that I walked out with a full belly but alas... none to bring home. The steamed brown rice was a surprise to me because I was expecting the typical Jasmine rice... but the rice was steamed perfectly and the nutty flavor of it was just perfect for the meal. It is a bit of a hole in the wall place but it isn't without its own simple charm. It's a tiny place (maybe 20 tables) with concrete floors and nondescript decor but the kitchen is smack dab in the middle of the dining room and the smells while waiting for your food will drive you insane with anticipation. Our waitress was none other than the Proprietress herself, Ms. Toy! She was a very busy lady and watching her was exhausting! LOL! She was absolutely charming and was busy hopping from table to table and seemed to be very friendly and familiar with her patrons. My overall impression of Toy's Cafe is that it is a friendly place that the locals would rather remain secret from the rest of the world. I don't blame them. But I hope they won't mind if I sneak in every once in a while. The food is world class.

I'd definitely not characterize the portions as meager! Especially for take-out food, there's always more than I can eat in a dish. I still get an appetizer because they are so tasty! I really like that Toys uses brown rice by default.

Authentic but meager
By ,
Portions used to be more generous here but now they are meager. Food is still quite excellent though and setting is truly authentic right down to the straw in the plaster and the people. Its a great place to go if you want to eat light or if you do not mind getting an appetizer with your dinner to round it out. All of the appetizers are wonderful, I especially like the corn patties.

Unspeakably wonderful peanut sauce
By ,
Shrimp with peanut sauce. The world must know. Though it offers nothing special in the way of atmosphere, still this tiny Thai restaurant is a must. The service is good, the kitchen is out in the middle of the dining area, and the peanut sauce is frighteningly good.

This place is the most delicious Thai food I ever had by far. Very cool looking place and the kitchen is in the heart of the restaurant; so, you can see what they put in your dish. Highly recommand you to try this Thai restaurant, you will love it!
