Smokeys John Bar-B-Que
Smokey John's Bar-B-Que and Home Cooking first opened its doors for business in 1976 on the corner of Lemmon and Mockingbird under the name of Big John's . Soon, this busy intersection was filled with the alluring aroma of burning hickory. The hickory smoke became the signature of the neighborhood. Owner John Reaves earned the name Smokey John and the name change soon followed. During the past 33 years Smokey John's has developed a reputation for great food, great service and a commitment to giving back to the community. Smokey John's has been an active and generous corporate citizen supporting churches, Christian ministries, schools, youth programs, senior organizations as well as various local and state political candidates.
First, I must say that the young gentleman who prepared my food was very caring and professional. He really wanted to offer me a positive food experience. I ordered ribs and brisket with potato salad, and beans and asked for the more loose cut, marbled beef.
The potato salad and beans were okay. Some of the ribs were a bit dry to chew. The brisket was disappointing-dry, flavorless, sort of like paper. I only ate a small bite of everything.
The young gentlemen sensed that I wasn't enjoying it, and offered for me to get something else. I thanked him.
Unfortunately, the manager (owner?) stopped by next and told me that he won't serve fatty beef because it's unhealthy. So, does that mean that his ribs are health food? He walked away and loudly told the other workers that 'She wanted FAT brisket!'
Embarassed, I got up and left. I am unemployed, and I saved up to have a once-a month meal out. Now I am out of 14.00 and I have no food. I will not return. I've been to places where I didn't enjoy the food, yet I at least enjoyed the great customer service.
Fortunately, there are some really good BBQ places available in Dallas
The backed potato was old and hard and the hot link
sandwich was so old and dry that it tasted more like
they filled it with corn meal and grits. It was horrible and cost too much for the substandard quality you got.....STRAIGHT NASTY will never recommend to anyone, unless you want to pay them to throw up
Dude, I also go to Smokey John's before heading over to the Zacuzzi at Nagoya! I think the pinto beans help me regain my focus and create positive bursts of energy while at the spa. Stay away from those tamales- last time I ate them, I spent the better portion of a Sunday on the toilet reading a Danielle Steel novel.
Decided to come by Smokey John's just before heading to Nagoya to sit in the Zacuzzi. The brisket looked dry, but actually had a nice smokey flavor (I guess that's why they call it Smokey John's). I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have jalapenos for my sammich, but not as disappointed as the time I found out Neil Patrick Harris was gay. The sides were decent, too. If you think you've already eaten the worst tamales at some other establishment, you are wrong. The worst tamales in the world are served up daily here at Smokey John's. They were dry, like the scalp of someone with psoriasis. As someone in my dining party stated, you want the taste to leave your mouth and never come back. To top it off, they served them with some chili concoction that looked similar to the findings in a toddler's diaper. So, stay away from the tamales. Eat the other stuff and you'll be just fine.
