This family-run restaurant offers great service and above-average Bar-B-Que meals. Older restaurants like this one know how to keep attracting folks by offering a casual atmosphere and dependable, friendly service. Delicious chicken and beef sandwiches are on the menu as well as tasty fried okra and crisp salads. The pecan pies are even better than the ones your own mom bakes! You can order one to go, serve it at home and pretend that you're the talented cook. Beer and wine are available.
I can't imagine any place beng less snooty than Sammy's. I've known the family for years and they are kind, good-hearted folks. I have eaten at this place (sometimes twice a week) for several years since it is owned by the family of a co-worker of mine. Great BBQ and great side dishes, all family recipies.
Go to the original Sonny Bryan's bbq joint on Inwood rd across from St Paul's for the best Dallas has to offer. I've been lunching on bbq ribs out of that smoke house for over 35 years. I think the place openend in the 1940's. be sure and wash it all down with a fishbowl of their icy cold tap budweiser. mmmmm...... ps go early...
The food there is excellent.. Everything that ive had (all the different meats and side dishes) are really good.. I live really far from down town dallas but sometimes I make the drive on saturdays to catch their lunch. The portions are huge and the price is good. It can be hard to find if you have never been there but its worth the drive.
Okay, this place is really hard to find. My colleague and I, after calling Sammy's up after 20 minutes of driving around, and after rejecting impulses to eat at other places, finally stumbled upon it ... And it was if the Gods of BBQ said: WE WERE WORTHY.
Both of us had the chopped beef (yum), slaw (sublime), rings (ditto) and apple pie a la mode (double dito).
Owner/staff could not have been more friendly/lovely/ helpful to a couple of NY hockey journalists.
One problem: this place should be part of the witness protection program OR a smoked production of Brigadoon it's so hard to find.
This place may make me a fan of the Stars yet.
My feeling is that you cannot love BBQ until you've tried Sammy's. I've been to both locations in Highland Park and Downtown Dallas and it is so yummy! A big plus for me is that it works with my low carb diet!
Being a BBQ LOVER this is a fantastic spot. The Prichard's (owners) run a very efficient BBQ joint.

The meats are high quality, the cooking is consistent and the food is dependable and delicous. As your heading through the cafeteria style line dont pass up the Baked Potatoe casserole, the Fried Okra, or the Squash casserole.
Not just the meats...all of which are the best anywhere...but the sides are amazing. I have a hard time picking which 2 to have each time we eat there. The baked potato casserole is the #1 pick and the squash casserole, spinach salad, and beans are close seconds. The lemon squares and pecan pie are better than I've ever had anywhere...even homemade by mom. Sammy's isn't a new place that tries to look old...it is an old grocery store and is the perfect setting...the long lines (which move quickly) testify to the fact that it's a lunch favorite!
