Look ... this is THE diner in East Baton Rouge Parish. If you only have one breakfast or lunch in BR, go to Frank's. This place is worth the trip up Airline from I-12 if you're just passing through (truckers & RV's will have trouble finding parking).
This is a DINER, not some pretentious overpriced phony with a cute name. 2 over easy + pancakes + bacon + grits + biscuit + Community coffee for like $6. Anywhere else you're talking $10. The plate lunches are unbelievable - mounded high with so much food you'll be waddling out for about $8. Eg., half a roasting chicken with baked sweet potato, green beans, and cornbread or biscuit. Excellent, excellent hamburgers & fries for less $.
The customers are regular folks - men who actually work & take care of their families, women with husbands who work, parents with kids, grandparents still in love, retired dudes fixing to go shoot some golf, old ladies on their bargain runs. One review complains about the 'noise', well this aint no funeral home. This place is full of the music of life: people eating, talking, laughing, dishes rattling, cooks yelling, food frying.
The waitresses are super nice, hard working, good looking gals in jeans and t-shirts. The lighting is incandescent, which immediately puts Frank's about 2 notches above everyone else for atmosphere.
After you're done, you can even go up to Ed Price for some home improvement or across the street to Academy for some sweatpants or ammunition. Cortana Mall is a couple blocks back the other way.
You won't regret Frank's.
It has decent prices on the menu but I miss their old recipe for the onion rings. They changed it so now I don't have much of an urge to go eat there because I always ordered the onion rings. They were the best! It does take awhile for the food to get their and it can be noisy when it gets busy.
Frank's Restaurant is probably best known as being the 'meeting' place for breakfast. The food is good and not over-priced but usually very slow getting to the table, not enough cooks in the kitchen to handle the crowds. It takes way too long after ordering to get your food. For the most part the waitresses are nice, but need to learn not to reach across your face to fill a coffee cup or pick up a plate. It can get real noisy so don't try to have a serious business breakfast there. If it's a quick breakfast your wanting, find another place.
