Like Sushi?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/24/09
I am a sushi freak of epic proportion, and the sushi here was VERY GOOD. I was impressed! Even our little sushi-phobic friend enjoyed herself and the sushi, too.

First, let me say, I was a Hibachi chef for 10 yrs. So I know a thing or two about hibachi, and I must say, that they have a chef ( Head chef Jason ) with skills on the grills I have never before seen. AMAZING !!! I left fully entertained and my stomach satisfied, I cant tell you how many restaurants I have been to where the chef hardly puts on a show or talk to the table. Nowadays with so many Japanese restaurants opening up , its hard to find a skilled chef. Usually the chefs I've encountered just barely made it, and earned the name Hibachi chef. It seems like theyre hiring and training just anybody willing to work. The game is just not what it use to be anymore. Its sad to see the bar get so low. Its a breath of fresh air to finally be able to sit down in front of a chef of this calibar. I would recomend this place for anyone who whats to see a skilled chef at work, I did not try the sushi so I dare not comment on that half, but I've met a master, and even with my 10 yrs, I fully respect this young chef, and I know he will go a long way. Thank you master chef J. - Yoshi Tanaka - Veteran Chef.

We really enjoy this restaraunt. It's very nice inside, and not usually as over crowded as a few of the other Hibachi rest. in Lafayette. This rest. is by far teh best Hibachi in town, and the sushi is not half bad either. I definitely recommend!

There's a surprising amount of Japanese restaurants for a city the size of Lafayette, and it's tough to find a good restaurant that has fair prices and quality food. I've eaten at other sushi bars in town, such as Tsunami, Bonsai, Shinto, and Samurai, and they can't compare to Shangri-la. My girlfriend and I decided to eat at the sushi bar when we entered. Upon sitting at the sushi bar, we were greeted by all the chefs, and we were given a complimentary salad, just for sitting at the sushi bar. We ordered two rolls, and then asked the chef what he recommended. He ended up making us a roll that wasn't even on the menu, and it was delicious and amazing. He called it the "Precious Roll" which I highly recommend to anyone who goes. Service was quick, and we received our food shortly after ordering, and since we sat at the sushi bar, we could see the chef making our food, so we knew it was fresh. In the end, we definitely enjoyed our experience, and we will definitely go back for more.

After trying this place out many times, I will not eat @ Shangri-la again(not even for happy hour). The sushi chefs are sub-par even for Lafayette.

Hibachi Grill
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/5/05
I enjoyed how they cook everything in front of me and I just love the techniques and the skill that shown by the chef. Sme places they just cook without even show some skills which is boring but this place is great. Apart from enjoying the show, I love the food...taste just right for me. Price is quite reasonable, I could've order some of those sushi too but too full-up. Went home with a smile on my face and tummy feels good too. Price PROS: Hibachi and sushi are the best. CONS: Need some improvement on the building.
