Big Fred's Restaurant & Lounge
Pizza is made only one way at this joint: a thin, hand-tossed crust, a touch of tomato, plenty of cheese and your favorite toppings. Pasta and meatballs are another favorite here. The menu also features sandwiches and prime rib, along with salad covered in Fred's own Italian dressing. Sports fans can follow the day's events on televisions scattered throughout the restaurant, while a full-service bar quenches their thirst. Be prepared for a wait on Friday and Saturday evenings.
As I've read in a few of the other reviews, Big Fred's is WAY OVERATED and definitely not the best in Omaha, unless you like lots of beef/hamburger with no sauce or taste on some bread. Also, we ordered a fish sandwich. It was fried past well done and looked just like you buy in the frozen dept in the store, including the HAMBURGER bun. The service was SLOW even tho there was plenty of help and not very busy while we were there. Will we go back? Not unless someone invites us there for a special occasion and then we would even have to consider it.
Horrid is all I can say.
Sausage was terrible. Just as Bill said. WAY TOOOO MUCH. Could not taste anything else than that.
Lady asked me when she saw me taking pictures of it what I was doing. I told her I was going to tell her if it was in MY opinion, Omahas best pizza. NO.
All I had was sausage, but could not taste the sauce cept on the edges. When I did it was a chunk tomato sauce and I am not real fond of that either. But really could not taste anything with the LAYER of small fine partially cooked sausage. Lady said it was the best sausage in the state of Nebraska. yea right.
Cheese? Again the worthless sausage was so overwhelming one could not taste anything else on the pizza.
I did ask for it to be well done and that was good.
It may be good to some people as they were plenty busy but to this person it was HORRIBLE.
I am not a thick crust pizza person but to date, ORSI's is the best in Omaha. Do not like to compare or state that but if the truth hurts you better change something.
I will give 2 stars as the crust was decent and the cheese was browning as it was cooked to my liking.
Not what it once was: Big Fred's has been an Omaha Icon for many years, but I fail to see the value except as a destination to bring your family, let the kids run around and relax. Ive given the restaurant 3 visits in the last year and probably won't return. The pizza is average at best and the same goes for the service. While friendly, our last visit yielded a 30 minute wait for the pizza. It's a good place for a very informal bite to eat, but certainly nothing to rave about.
I wish Big Fred's would franchise to Phoenix. They have the best pizza I've ever had. It was one of my favorites when I lived in Omaha and it's the first place I go to once I get off the plane when I come back to visit.
