French Cafe

Description

One of the most popular upscale restaurants in town, this bistro has it all...outstanding food, intimate atmosphere and one of the best Sunday brunches around. Large windows run across the front of the sparsely decorated restaurant. One wall is covered by a black and white mural of photographs depicting the French dining experience. Dinner specialties include the restaurant's famous Filet Mignon with green peppercorn sauce and Chateaubriand for two . Be sure to save room for one of the cafe's unforgettable French pastries.

Elegant fine dining...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/25/10
Elegant fine dining in the midwest! This is definitely a five star experience. The food continues it's history of excellent french cusine in and elegant setting that takes you back in time. The service continues to be excellent. This is the perfect place to celebrate an anniversary or another romantic occassion. The wine list is superb.

We dined at the French Cafe on a Wednesday evening and left pleased with the overall service. Our waitress was attentive, without being obtrusive and she was knowledgeable about the dishes. She was honest regarding dishes she had not sampled, which was refreshing. Our courses were presented in a well timed manner, with the proper delay between the wine, the salad and the entrée. I had the Duck a l’Orange, while my wife chose the Sea Bass au beurre blanc, both platings were very well presented. The duck breast was just slightly on the tough side but the flavor was excellent as was the orange sauce. The duck leg confit literally melted in the mouth. The French classic butter sauce of beurre blanc under the sea bass was possibly the best I have had. The superb quality of meat and vegetables was obvious with these two dishes; it is only safe to assume that every entrée has this same outstanding superiority. Again our waitress allowed us ample time between the entrée and dessert to converse and enjoy the atmosphere before she brought our choice of desserts. The Citrus Cheesecake my wife enjoyed was light to the palate without that typical heavy cream cheese feel; I would love to get their recipe! I had the Crème Brule and was slightly disappointed that the dish was presented with the burnt sugar crust cold. The texture of the Brule was proper and appealing and the taste was to standard of any found in the finest restaurants in New Orleans.

Decent atmosphere, though very indifferent waiter who seated us right where the kitchen staff was coming in/out. I ordered the advertised "special" of beef ternderloin with lobster tails. $65 later, and two lobster tails that were the size of dwarf carrots. I won't be a return customer. Dined at Vivace's in the Old Market this past weekend. Stellar service, atmosphere, and courteous wait staff.

New Years Eve Disappointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/2/07
5 course meal and the first 3 were totally unremarkable. The fish main entree was just okay, the sauce reminded me of turkey gravy. Creme brule was very good. Service slow, forgot a request and were around when you did not need and not around when you wanted. Bathrooms desparately need remodeling or detailed cleaning. Not a good value at all for the price. Did not feel that a sophisticated chef was at the helm whatsoever. The recommended wine was wonderful although we paid quite a bit for this. The strolling musicians choice of songs were wierd.

No Place Like It in Omaha
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/19/06
My wife & I have always gone to the French Cafe for our "special occasions"; birthdays, anniversaries, etc, for nearly 30 years now. The food is absolutely excellent. Extensive domestic & foreign wine list. And the Soup a l'onion is to die for. Try the chateaubriand for two.

Best meal in the past year...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/21/06
Great service, great food, great place... A little pricey, but amazing food. Tried a ham and chapolte gouda soup that was just fantastic. Would recommend the pork tenderloin too!!! Tony will treat you right! I will definitely go back next time I'm in town.

Absolutely the best service ever.

The restuarant is intimately decorated, well appointed, and the food and service? The best. The perfect Absolut martini, well trained staff.
