Description

The Bohemian Cafe has been serving Omaha's hungry Czechs and non-Czech since 1924. Louie Macala was chef-owner until 1947 when he sold it to Josef and Ann (Kapoun) Libor and stayed on as chef. Our grandparents, Babi and Deda, operated the cafe at 1256 So. 13th St. until 1959 when they moved a half block south to our current location. The site was a bank (Bohemian S & L) and a grocery store (Amen's) so there were a lot of changes to be made to get it suitable for a restaurant. Babi and Deda built there reputation through long, hard hours and genuine hospitality. They retired in 1966 and 2 more generations of the Kapoun family has since been cooking, serving, cleaning and busy trying to bring you Dumplings and Kraut today. With the 4th generation chipping in, we hope to be Omaha's European Connection for years to come.

The Bohemian is a classic; both in Omaha history and in the quality and taste of it's food. I have been a patron of the Cafe since my son was in grade school and have never had a negative experience or meal that has not left me wanting to come back for more. I was in the Cafe the night that the gentleman was there and was unfortunately privvy to his obnoxious language and manner towards the staff and manager regarding his beliefs about the food, it authenticity and preparation. The gentleman, and I use this term loosely, raged and used profanity within earshot of children, made accusations towards staff regarding their ability and deservedness of a tip and continued with a ghastly diatribe regarding his bill and his refusal to pay for his and his dates dinner. I was embarrassed for him, his guest, other diners and particularly for the staff, who maintained their dignity until his manner became increasing obnoxious. Even the, the manager was polite and suggested that only if the gentleman refused to pay for his dates meal would he call the police. Further, both he and his date finished their meals before his monologue began! Visit the cafe, you will be enchanted by it's ambiance, quaintness and authentic Czech food and music. make your own decision. TO THE MAN WHO COMPLAINED: Go to McDonalds to each, apparently your sense of taste reaches the level of a Big Mac

Worst experience of my life. The food is not freshly cooked. The soup comes and it is noodles and chicken broth. No vegetables, no chicken, just bad broth and noodles with 0 flavor. I ordered the schnitzel and was expecting everything to be made fresh for the prices. The meat was so old that it took a glass of water after every bite to choke it down. You heard me right they don't even cook the meat fresh for you. The waitress said they fry it and then it sits in a pan waiting to be served. You don't even get a whole piece of veal. It was 3 or 4 pieces of veal that had been presliced for that extra dry taste you want. The description says with mushrooms and onions. I got one canned mushroom and 0 onions. The dumplings weren't even made in house either. It sits in a pan for hours waiting for you to order it and then when you get it it is dried out and disgusting. The waitress admitted that nothing was made in house at this point and that the mashed potatoes were boxed mashed potatoes. Yes, you heard me correctly they can't even make a dish that only takes 15 minutes and 0 talent. So you're thinking well the food sounds pretty bad but hey maybe it's a good price. 17.50 for all of that. More than you would spend at most steak houses in this town. The cheapest meal on the menu is the goulash and it was 13.50 and my girlfriend ordered that one. The same exact experience. Everything was premade, meat so dry you can't swallow. So i think to myself should I just try to finish. Nope. I'm not paying 40 bucks for two meals that are disgusting. I bring it to the manager and say "You are charging some really high prices for food that is not to that standard." His reply "Pay for it or i will call the cops." I say "Listen I'm really not trying to be a dick about this. I have worked in restaurants my entire life. I know how this industry works. I know what 3 hour old meat looks and tastes like. I can tell the difference between fresh and boxed mashed potatoes. I know the difference between home made sauces and store bought sauces. This meal clearly did not cost you anywhere near 40 dollars to make and I am slightly insulted you would serve this kind of food at those kinds of prices." His reply "I don't care if you didn't like it your going to pay for it." I say " I am willing to meet you in the middle of the road somewhere but i only ate two bites of your food and it was really really bad." And so he called the cops. He called the cops on a paying customer who didn't like his food. To top it off it was my birthday dinner. Not only would i never eat here again i will see to tell everyone about my experience. Hands down the worst restaurant experience I've ever had at any restaurant ever. I was going into it expecting to have a great meal and came out talking to the cops. I would advise you not to go there under any circumstances ever. Or go there and marvel at the worst place to eat in Omaha. I would put day old Mcdonalds above the.

My sister and I, both elderly, live out here in Maryland. We both wish that before we die, we will be able to eat one more meal at Bohemian Cafe. This is the closest you will ever get to the Czech home cooked meals like mother made. I have recommended this place to my friends who travel back to Omaha. They love the place. The never fail to eat at Bohemian Cafe.

Traditional Czech food in a charming, friendly environment. Sample classic goulash, sauerbraten or duck served by a friendly, attentive wait staff dressed in traditional Czech costumes. First-time diners are treated like regulars. The heavier fare, including dumplings which are available with just about every meal, means you won't go away hungry. A Pilsner Urquell in a chilled ceramic stein adds to the experience,

Great food with large portions. Wait staff is one of the best in Omaha. I have never had a bad meal or bad service. Prices seem a little high until you see your portion. Great place to bring people from out of town. Big bonus is all of the parking!

The best in town!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/4/09
I have been eating at the Bohemian Cafe for almost 30 years now. The food is always delicious and is traditional Czech food. My favorite meals are Svickova (boiled beef) and Burgundy style roast beef with bread dumplings, sweet and sour cabbage and liver dumpling soup. I always top the meal off with a delicious dessert - a cherry kolache (a traditional Czech pastry). The prices are very reasonable. A must stop for anyone visiting or living in the Omaha area.

Great atmosphere, food is very good and plentiful. Wait staff is attentive, filling drinks, always a step ahead of their customers. Quaint old fashioned place. Highly recommend!
