Highly recommended for wonderful steaks, this restaurant has long been regarded as one of Omaha's favorite steakhouses. Located in the heart of South Omaha, home to the stockyards, this restaurant has been serving up delicious Nebraska-fed beef for nearly 80 years. Guests find the menu, offering a large selection of steak and seafood specialties, guaranteed to accommodate nearly any appetite. For dinner, try a succulent sirloin or tasty porterhouse. Reservations are encouraged on Friday and Saturday.
This is still, in my opinion, a terrific place for a steak. They cut and age their meat in-house (or so they tell me), and the staff is consistent about the manner in which they do the cooking. A rare steak here is actually rare, thank Zeus! What is a total embarrassment for this 90-year old restaurant is the fact that the salad is pure plastic-bagged garbage, the potatoes are cooked (in the best-case scenario) yesterday, then nuked to order. The cheese atop the same has taken on the qualities of spray-foam crack filler, the decor is old to the point of being unclean and they have stopped even warming their bread. If you are the owner/management reading this: Call Gordon Ramsey IMMEDIATELY, or just decide to not half-ass it anymore. With so many great dining options in Omaha, you are absolutely headed to your death, and you are hurting all of us who want to believe in your place. Again, to recap: Great steak, all else crap. Without the steak, torching the place for the insurance money would be your best recourse.
The food at Johnny's was the best. We had the kindest waiter too. We went at night and there wasn't many people there. At night it really has an old time atmosphere, like you were back in the 1920's or the 30's; kind of spooky. We all loved it though.
This is a great piece of Omaha history and a great place to get a steak. Located near what was once the stockyards, the food is entirely made from scratch. The steak and salads are great. The service when I was there was superb. Only knock: the decor could use updating; however, I go to restaurants for the food, not the appearance.
I've noticed a major slide in service and quality in many restraunts in Omaha.
Johnny's unfortunately is no exception. The people who work there are nice but the decor is dated and the food is not up to the prices charged. I'm going there tommorrow for our office Christmas party and will revise my comments if things improve.
Incredible atmosphere, incredible food, a place for all ages. Awesome for a romantic dinner, or just as awesome to bring the entire family. Reminds me of dining in an old time Hollywood steak house. They have been in business this long for a reason... Some of the best Steak we have ever had.
We have enjoyed lunches at Johnny's for years, and love their food. On Tuesdays you must go to have their wonderful chicken and dumplings or braised oxtails. They are noted for their oxtails. And of course, their own Johnny's salad dressing....so good, so hard to make a choice between soup or salad, so have both, as both excellent.
