Lousy service for only slightly average food. I wasn't overly impressed by really anything here. Omaha isn't a sushi city by any means. Every place (Sakura, Blue, Hiro) are just average, and this follows in that tradition.
I don't know what Matt is talking about, however everyone is entitled to their opinion. We have a limited number of sushi restaurants in Omaha, and the other restaurants I have been to have great customer service, the food just isn't as good. Matt, haven't you ever gone somewhere with lousy service and fabulous food? Sometimes it is worth it.
A seasoned sushi veteran, my friend visits Matsu, and took me there for my first 'real' sushi. The atmosphere was superb, the food divine and the Plumtinis just heightened an already enjoyable experience. The chef and staff were talkative and very friendly. They recognize many by name and enjoy meeting new customers, happily answering questions and offering menu suggestions.
I anticipate my next visit.
Unlike the other sushi places in town, it is far more casual while serving the same quality of sushi. The rest of the food I've had there has a very 'home cooking' quality to it. I give it 5 stars for different reason. If I'm not all dressed up and with a group of people, it is far more pleasant to go to Matsu Sushi. You can go there in jeans or your frumpy clothes and not worry about being treated like someone the staff wants to get rid of as soon as possible. (Blue) If you have been cleaning all day, or working on projects, you don't have to spend an hour getting ready for a meal. Just freshen yourself up a bit and stroll on over to Matsu. I love it for it's down home feeling while still getting good quality sushi. I have not tried anything other then the sushi and some of the appetizers and side. I have no idea what the meals on the menu are like.
I have been to Matsu Sushi many times. The running joke is great food...bad service. The only reason we go back is for the spicy crunchy salmon rolls. They are heaven! Service is awful. Slow, rude at times, inept. You often have to go up to the counter to get your drink, refills, your soup, your check, etc (and it is a sit-down place!). I cannot believe that we put up with it - but again - great food! I recommend take out, but make sure to check your order right there.
A great place downtown to get sushi rolls and sake! Definitely try the sake sampler and don't plan to drive for at least one or two hours after. Even though the sushi may take a little time to get out to you it is worth it. Service is friendly and the place is very clean.
Downtown Omaha really doesn't have much in the way of international cuisine but this place is a gem and friendly for singles, couples, and families alike.
I have been to every sushi restaurant in town and though this place is very small and nothing fancy, there sushi is by far the best with the best prices. They also have a huge selection to choose from for half price sushi hours. If you like spicy rolls...try the Kaji Maki roll. It is to die for!
The food was ok. The atmosphere was amusing. Take a look at the pictures on the wall that are in oversized frames and the poster is taped to the frame with old yellowing tape. It looks like they got the pics from a thrift store. The menus were falling apart. The service was fine. Very small. It was almost full at 7pm on a Thursday. I had a california roll with cream cheese added and a spider roll. Both were good but Hiro's sushi is better. However, this place is cheaper. It is very 'mom and pop' as someone else had said. So no need to dress up. I would go here just to grab some food but not for an anniversary or anything.
