I have heard about this restaurant all my life,
but had never been there. Initially, I think it
was a private club, before Kansas had
liquor by the drink and it required a membership. I left Kansas after college and came back for visits, but always went to my favorite restaurant, the China Inn (Sadly, it has closed.) to have a nice meal with my parents. So, we were looking for another place to go and I remebered The North Star. It is only about a mile or so from my parent's house, but I would be hard pressed to find it. The building is nondescript. I opened the door and there was small enclosed entry with another door on the other side. It made me think of a more notorious time and I guess The North Star has a rich history of being a speakeasy and hideaway. Anyway to the food. Excellent steaks!!! The beef is tender and flavorful and well prepared. I had a bake potato instead of the fries. It was quite good. I'll try the fries the next time I go. The manager was great and the waitress got everything right. My mom had the shrimp and I feel the batter could be mixed with some corn meal to make it a little lighter, but the shrimp was fresh and tasty. I love the dining area. Dark wood booths with high backs giving the feeling of seclusion. It was fun.
Our family absolutely loves the North Star. Their steaks are exceptionally good. They've got the best gravy and fries in town. We try to make it their at least twice a month if not more. They've also got the best margaritas in town I think. The wait staff and Jeff ( the manager) are very good to us. I highly recommend this place, there really is no comparison to other steakhouses. If you read this and haven't been there before, tell'em Tonya sent ya.
