Free State Brewing Company, Lawrence

We had not eaten here for more than 8 years so we stopped in on a Saturday evening to give it another look. We had been pleased with our last couple of visits and wanted to see if they were still on par. We had to pass through a bit of a crowd and were told 5-10 min. for 2 people which really worked out to be more like 30 minutes but the weather was good so it wasn't a big deal. The "porch" out front is nice but it gets pretty old having to smell the cigarette smoke while you stand out there and the ashtray device sitting right by the door needs to be moved. We were seated in the upper level towards the rear that had several two person tables. That area is well done and was small but comfortable with plenty of room between the tables so you weren't bumping into other patrons. One of us had the burger with a side of clam chowder. The burger was perfectly cooked to med. well with a slightly toasted onion bun. The chowder was not bad but just a little bland and a bit of salt/pepper was needed to bring out just a bit more flavor. It's possible they watch the amount of salt they cook with which could leave it little wanting for flavor. The size of the cup the soup was served in turned out to be just the right size for that meal. The other order was the smoked turkey sandwich with wedge fries which also included a fair sized serving of red grapes which was a welcome addition and complemented the sandwich very well. The sandwich had been toasted just right and did not come off as mushy which can happen if it's not done correctly. Our waiter was first rate and kept our glasses topped off constantly and cleared the table the moment we were done with our meal.

Great place with diverse, exciting menu. The specials for whichever chef is in charge that day are winners, and the seasonal and standard offerings are good, good, good. If you're a beer fan, you'll think you died and went to heaven.

When you first walk in you gag from all the smokers that sit in front. The service is good. Very loud inside. Like the beer and friendliness of the customers. Food is good and reasonable. I used to go 3-4 times a week. When you leave be ready to gag again because of all the smokers by the front door.

The atmosphere of Free State Brewery is what makes it so special. It seems to represent the heart of the town. They utilize a number of farmers for the freshest ingredients. My favorite meal there is the avocado chimichurri, followed by the Brewhouse Chicken Salad. If you are in town, Free State is the place to feel the culture of Lawrence. Make sure to come early... they are fairly busy all of the time!

Appetizers are great. Beer is the best. The main course...not so much.

A rather classy place with great food, drinks and service in the heart of Lawrence.

Best restaurant in Lawrence that represents Lawrence. Not a place to bring the family but a business associate, date, parents or friends. Food is great and you can taste it being grown in their greenhouses. The best beer (obvious from their World wide awards) I have ever had is their copperhead Pale Ale even that of Europe but it isn't always the same since it is a micro brewery. I have been there many times and it is my and Lawrence's favorite restaurant.

This is the best reasonable priced place in town! they use local ingredients when possible.The owner grows lots of tomatoes for instance.Thank god they only have one TV,lol.Go on Monday for beer specials.They have food specials everyday.Nationally famous portabella sandwich,many vegetarian options,steak,you name it,they probably make it at least once in a while.Best beer outside of Boulder in the midwest!

Freestate is by far my favorite restaurant. The food is amazing, the beer is amazing, and the service too, is amazing. Their wheatstate golden paired with the hot artichoke dip can't be beat. My personal favorite is their tuna sandwich. Yum! A MUST try!

The servers here actually eat the food. The last time I went my server even knew what farm my side dish came from. The inside is pleasant, and the food is great. Even if you don't drink there are plenty of dishes you will love
