It was in his family's restaurant in Italy that, at a very young age, Nicola Gilardi learned the importance of a strong work ethic and began the development of his career in culinary arts. As he grew, he enriched his natural culinary skills in the family restaurant, and sought to pursue his dream--to one day open his very own restaurant. He was proudly accepted at Crotto Caurga "I Pas," a culinary school in Italy, and upon successful completion of his training, Nicola worked in the finest restaurants, within various countries, such as the Island of Sardinia on the Mediterranean Sea, Germany, Switzerland, and the Caribbean Islands. He moved to New York in 1991 and continued his endeavor to fulfill his childhood dreams. As an integral part of opening ITres Merli, located in Chicago, Nicola Gilardi then became part owner of Teatro Ristorante in Springfield, Missouri. It was at Teatro's that he met his future wife, Monica, and her son J.R. , and in October of 1998, Nicola and Monica opened Gilardiac2s Ristorante. At long last, Nicola Gilardi's childhood dream had finally come true.
The waitperson was condescending. The servings were so salted, I could only stomach 1/2 of my meal, and probably went over my daily sodium intake by 3X. My friends meal was much the same. Dessert did not fare any better, as I have had better Spumoni from the grocery store. All this for only $70.00. My suggestion is to try somewhere else.
Gilardi's is the best Italian I have ever eaten...although I don't live in Springfield and I haven't eaten at all of the restaurants in Springfield, it is by far the best one I have been to. Wonderful food, we were very impressed.
I miss Chef Gilardi downtown, however the food is as wonderful as ever...everyone seems to think it's only for couples or special occasions, I would dine there weekly if I could only afford to...the gnocci, ossobuco, beff carpacio, any of the specials, the service is always excellent and so is the night!
Being from out of town, this restaurant was recommended to me as one that served great, classic italian food. So with a healthy appetite and wallet I took a friend there recently for an early dinner, hoping that it was all they said it was. Sadly, it wasn't. The first indication was my salad which was served with a tomato way past it's prime and some limp letttuce. Hmmm. Next up was a wonderful sounding prawn appetizer that was tasty but I really didn't get what they were thinking with the rest of the mess in the martini glass it was served in. It was just weird. For my entree I ordered Ossobuco, a favorite of mine. While the meat was soft and the serving large enough, it was virtually without any flavor due to the exclusion of herbs or spices including the traditional gremolata that goes on top. What a letdown. A pricey one. For the romantics, yes, the ambience is great and for someone who hasn't had a great deal of experience in culinary pursuits, the food will be fine. I wish it had been better for my visit, I really wanted to like this place. Maybe it was just an off night, who knows.
I moved to Fort Worth, TX. about eight months ago, and Risorante Gilardi's is about the only thing from Springfield that I truly miss. I have tried several Italian restaurants in Fort Worth that come highly recommended and have been disappointed each time. It is hard to compare to the delightful ambiance, superb Italian cuisine, extensive wine list, and good service that accompany a visit to Gilardi's. Not to mention, the executive chef/owner, Nicola Gilardi, is a hoot. I would highly recommend the seafood cakes, pork shank, and the filetto gorgonzola. I will be in Springfield in a few weeks to attend an engagement party, and eating at Gilardi's is one of the first things on my list. I suggest that anyone else in Springfield do the same.
Cozy place with outstanding food and wine selection. We enjoy taking friends and enjoying the evening. Can be pricey but well worth it. They are not trying to clear your table as soon as you finish your food. The Terrimazou (sp) is outstanding.
I'm from the St. Louis area and will make the drive with my husband just to eat at this resturant. Nothing compares to the authentic Italian food, w/ chef/owner being authintic Italian as well. I dare say it's better than anything on The Hill in StL. It's pricey, but that's what is to be expected with the type of atmosphere. You get above and beyond what you pay for. Try the PENNE ALLA VODKA WITH CHICKEN
