Gojo Japanese Steak House, Kansas City

I love Gojo's and have been going there for over 20 years. My husband and I had our first (blind) date there, and have been going back ever since. They are a good value for the money compared to other Japanese Steakhouses, although I have to agree with others that getting a reservation can be trying as they are sometimes slow to answer the phone. It's always a fun time though.

I know everyone says how they’ve been going to GoJo’s for years and how wonderful the food is. In 1987 my family and I, consisting of my husband and two daughters, started going to GoJo’s the Friday after Thanksgiving. They enjoyed it so much they would request it as their birthday meal. From that moment on it’s been a tradition in our household. Year after year we would go to Crown Center and see the Mayor’s Christmas Tree ceremony and then off to GoJo’s. What a wonderful evening. As the years passed our family of 4 grew and grew. In 2004 our family hit 10 with son-in-law’s and grandchildren. Since 2006 we have had to have a table and ½. I call the first of November every year book our table and ½ with no problems. This year was certainly different. After someone finally answered the phone the hostess informed me I couldn’t book more than one table for Friday evening. I didn’t understand why and asked, she wouldn’t give me a reason and when I asked if I could make 2 reservations she hung up on me. I understand the food is wonderful but it’s not worth the abuse by the staff. It’s sad but I guess it’s time to take our money and tradition and go elsewhere.

My wife and I have gone to Gojo 2 or 3 times a year for the last 16 years. The quality of the food is consistently great. The quality of the wait service has gone down a little over the past few years. There have been problems with drink orders, and sorting out checks. The chefs have also not been as entertaining over the past 2 years. But overall, it is one of the best places to eat in all of KC, especially in light of the reasonable cost.

My husband and I went there with our family and the food was quite tasty however the place is not clean and the shrimp are not deviened you would think for the price they could serve shrimp that is deviened. I thought it was against health code to serve shrimp that is not deveined. I don't think they clean those grills very well. My granddaughter and I both got very ill after eating there we had to take my granddaughter to the emergency room. The food is great but you take a chance of getting sick eating there. I will not eat there again.

For the price, taste and value, this is the best Japanese restaurant in Kansas City. The food is delicious. I always get the the chicken terriyaki and crab meat and it tastes great everytime I go there, There salad is awesome too. It doesn't have the creamy-based salad dressing like most japanese restaurants have. They have a unique, asian flavored dressing that you can only get there. You definitely won't be disappointed with this place!

My boyfriend surprised me with a birthday dinner with all of my friend's and after the wonderful meal, gave me a gorgeous promise ring that I never take off. This is one of the best places in town, and a great place to make some memories, I'm going there again tomorrow night, you should try it!!

Have been celebrating daughter's birthday the past 10 years at Gojo's. Prices have remained reasonable/food is good but portions have decreased over the past year. Our cook this year was average not as entertaining or talkative. Scallops are great!! Server was the worst ever couldn't remember who order what drink, then slow to refill drinks. Told 4 times who was on which tickets - but still presented 1 bill instead of 3 and had to correct twice. Continues to go left(downward) on service. Management needs to step-up or they will continue to go downhill.
