Mother in Law House
Fine Dining in a Casual atmosphere with friendly service. Enjoy your meal in our Victorian dining room or our river-view patio. The entrees at the Mother-in-Law House are prepared to order and made from the best ingredients. The owner, Donna Hafer, has been pleasing guest here since 1981.
We frequent the old town often and always wanted to experience the mother in law house, glad we stopped, it was a romantic environment, the staff was very friendly and when we received the bill I was shocked it was so cheap, thank you for the nice evening and the great service.
I've always had a good experience there. The food is always fresh and delicious. The servers are always attentive, sometimes even too much but no complaint there. I've taken my mom there a few times. She usually complains about restaurants in general and she had no complaints at all at the Mother in Law House. We had my sister-in-law's wedding shower there and it was great and now we are going to have my baby shower there.
Not impressed. Met a few friend for lunch and picked the Mother-In-Law because they had outside seating. Food was disappointing for such a nice place. Chicken salad came on plain white toast (would have been nice if they offered multi grain or cresant). The ham sandwich was deli ham. The salad could have used some grapes, pecans, seasoning. The lettuce was packaged or the end of the head (white). The dressing was good. Our drinks were filled once and never asked if we wantwd more after that. There were not many people so it was not busy. The patio needed to be power washed. There is great potential, just needs some TLC and revamping the menu.
My friend and I made reservations for 11:30am on a Saturday for a table for 2. The meal came out fast, but we were rather disappointed. The salad looked as though it came from a prepackaged back from the grocery store (no cheese, croutons, nuts, or other veggies besides one miniature tomato). We were done with our food within 15 min. and then waited 30 min. for the waitress to bring our bill. About 2 min. after our bill was brought the waitress told us that there was a significant number of parties waiting for a table and we would have to leave because they needed our table. We were not even there for an hour! When we left the waitress seated 2 people at our table and there were absolutely no other parties waiting. Not only was it rude to ask us to give up our table, but is was also unprofessional to lie to us about numerous parties waiting for tables. If someone makes reservations, plan on them being at the restaurant for at least an hour. It is just common sense and typical in the restaurant business! The Mother In Law House completely lacks customer service when they ask customers to leave because those who work there can't manage their appointment/reservations book or don't have appropriate accommodations. Also, if there were so many other parties waiting, why did it take the waitress a half hour to give us our bill? If there was such a rush like they claimed there was, then the bill would have been brought out much sooner.
BAD SERVICE AND SMELLY DOGS
Went for lunch with friends and ate outside on the patio. Food was good. We asked for separate checks and the waitress gave us one bill and charged us too much tax. In effort to fix it, she had to start over. In the meantime a man walked by our table with two large dogs. One of the dogs had some kind of disease on his rump, with large patch of bare skin, and it smelled very horrible. The strong odor carried in the air with every breeze. When I went to talk to the manager, she didn't stop to see what I wanted, but said she would come back (and did not). We left with a bad impression, and will never go back there again.
Excellent food, service, and ambiance. The owner, Donna, makes you feel extra special with her fresh, out of the oven blueberry muffins and candied carrots. It was so good that I'm having my dinner reception there after my wedding. - Orlando, FL
As my group first walekd into the restaurant a couple leaving mentioned to us what a good experience they had, and felt like they had gone back in to time. With that high praise, we went in for a very enjoyable dinner experience. The feel was very relaxed adn confortable. The hostess and the wiater were both older (at least over 40) which added to the ambiance, but more importantly, they were smiling and very friendly The all you care to eat salad bar was good. What I really noticed was that may of the choices were not overly sweetened as many places do, but instead had good seasoning. The entrees were quality and worth the price. Plus I ahve to mention the carrots, very tender and again a good flavoring and not too sweet. And finally the desert pie options were very tasty. I will be back and give high recomendations to this place adn hope they contineut o kepe up the great service and food. A really find in St. Charles.
