An old bank building in University City was converted several years ago to a combination root beer brewery and family restaurant, Fitz's draws an enthusiastic crowd of college students, adults and children. Diners can watch the root beer making and bottling processes through a large glass partition, all the while enjoying good pub food such as hamburgers, pizzas, etc. The root beer, a revered St. Louis formula that dates back to an old roadside stand from the 1940s, is terrific, too.
In our second family trip to St Louis in two years, this restaurant was on our must-do-again list and didn't disappoint!
Kids and adults are treated well. As other reviews indicated, portions are on the larger side of normal. If you like craft soda, you'll be happy with the free refills.
Wait staff was very good on both visits, but we had quicker service on the second visit because we arrived after most of the lunch hour crowd was already gone.
Maybe you wouldn't pick this place for a cheap quick, lunch or dinner, but if you're looking for special, fun place bar and grill (plus a few more options) food, but you don't want the smoke and bar-like atmosphere, this is a great find!
For families with infants and toddlers... Restrooms are small and not so convenient for diaper changing.
