John D McGurk's Irish Pub and Garden
This pub is as close to Dublin as you can get in St. Louis. You will find a large selection of beers, including 16 on tap, and live Irish bands frequently perform traditional Celtic music here. If you are looking for comfort food, especially on a chilly evening, try the traditional Irish potato soup, which is thick with potatoes, celery and onions and topped with cheese. If you are looking for the Irish-American favorite of corned beef and cabbage, you can order that, too. McGurk's was named Best Pub by an area publication.
an irish pub, in an historic french neighborhood; it seems like an inherant contradiction. yet every mardi gras McGurk's fits into the patchwork of soulard, in part by showing its own colors and never trying to be something it is not. instead mcgurk's has become a saint louis institution that remains accessible without sacrificing their gourmet food, tasty beers on tap, and actual irish folk music (they often live upstairs for weeks at a time) that have made the restaurant great.
If you are loking for a place that makes EVERYONE feel at home, this is the place to be. My boyfriend and I went to McGurks last weekend and once owe got there, we satayed until it was time to close. I recommend the Gaelic Steak; it was phenomenal! They have a great variety of beer and make an outstanding martini. If you are looking for a great place to sit and drink and be merry with REAL people, this is your best bet. And another sign of their responsibility, they encourage cabbies to come at close, because they want you to ARRIVE ALIVE next week. You gotta stop by!
The food here is wonderful and the beer selection is great. The recently remodeled patio is wonderful place to spend a lazy afternoon or evening. I honestly can't think of any complaints to list for McGurks.
We had lunch at McGurk's on a cold rainy day. The Irish Stew was great! I had the fish&chips which was good too. The atmosphere was nice. My teenaged son loved this place and talked about it over and over. I will definitely eat there again on my next trip to St. Louis. They have live music in the evenings but unfortunately, we didn't get to enjoy that.
First of all, it is huge..!!!
Great place for meeting with new people..!!!
Great place to hang out with friends...
It is located in a Safe neighbourhood...
In the middle of Soulard..!!!
Just got back from McGurk's tonight. The bangers and mash was excellent and the music was good. The place is huge and even had an outdoor fire. On the down side, I went there to eat and had to pay a $5 cover charge because I we got there after 9 PM. Drafts are $4.75, except Guiness Draft which was $6! I'd like to go back again, but at an earlier time just to eat dinner and listen to some Irish music for a little while before it started getting crowded.
When it comes to Irish pride and atmosphere, there is no other place to be than John D. McGurks Irish Pub. No, you should not wait until St. Pats Day to visit either.
On many nights I and a guest have sat at McGurks enjoying the wonderful atmosphere, fantastic food, and Live Irish Music. ( Check RFT or Call McGurks for thier live entertainment )
My female guest who had accompanied me for the evenings spent had enjoyed it as well and often asked for us to go back to McGurks... so guys... a place to take your date and not be in a club or uncomfortable resteraunt. Yea!
Ladys, it is a warm inviting atmosphere with a cool menu and drink list. A nice place for you and your friends to gather and enjoy a few laughs and smile.
I have to say, this is one of my favorite places in St.Louis for a great night out.
I'd definately suggest visting on Fri. or Sat. Evenings.... By draw of the luck.. this is usually when the live entertainment was...and it was Great Irish music.
Also a must for any other night as well for a great evening with your wife, girlfriend, friends, etc.
Last night , on the 22 of April, my husband went for our anniversary dinner, and for the 1st time I was disappointed in my meal. The waiterss was great except for the fact I got the wrong dinner, and she asked something odd, she asked how I'd like my meat cooked.. you ALWAYS cook pork thoroughly!! it was a pork dish but the wrong one. It was very dry, and virtually lacking taste and the smashed potatoes were also dry and didn't have much flavor and I received the wrong veggie. I would have said something but it was so chaotic outside we just left. We will be back but I will verify my order and be sure and not order any pork.
The ultimate true Pub experience in St. Louis. Step in here and you'll feel like you've actually crossed The Pond. Particularly welcoming on cold autumn or winter nights... but they have an immense patio area (which can be covered) as well! Authentic live music, Guinness stew (among other tasty choices), and all the expected brews on tap... But those brews will cost you- about a buck or two more than the same pint elsewhere around town. But hey- you're (almost) in Ireland!
Where they still play Irish music and serve Irish Brew. Total of four bars within the same establishment for all of your drinking needs. Not all open at the same time, but most busy nights. Great outdoor couryard for mingling and enjoying the night air in the Spring and Fall. Outside enclosed during the colder months.
Mixed crowd, but under 35 or so after 10:00pm. I just love the layed back astmostphere and the interesting people I always seem to meet or run in to there.
