Niemerg's Steak House
Niemerg's Steakhouse opened September 1, 1978. We are a locally owned, independent restaurant proud to have served over twenty four million customers over the last 35 years. A proud tradition we have adhered to over the years has been the preparation of more made - from - scratch food items in grandmother's style than any other restaurant in the area. We make all of our own salads, many of our salad dressings, daily luncheon and dinner specials, and numerous baked goods which would make any grandmother proud. Many of our staff of over 150 people have been with us for many years and are proud to be a part of the Niemerg's family. Without you, the customer, none of the above would have been possible. We are extremely grateful for your patronage and are looking forward to serving your dinner needs for many more years. We are now offering many Heartland Angus Beef cuts. Incredibly tender. Naturally juicy. Abundantly flavorful. We are very pleased and proud to offer the best beef money can buy to our valued customers. Heartland Angus Beef is the highest quality beef available with standards of excellence even more selective in marbling, maturity, and leanness than USDA Choice or Prime. So, let Niemerg's satisfy your hunger for a a mouth - watering steak with the finest in Heartland Angus Beef cuts.
This place is an old-persons dream. The decor is tacky and looks like your great-grandma's living room.
They have a fairly big menu and try to be down-home country cookin', but they fall WAY short of the mark when it comes to quality. My wife had the chicken livers and said they tasted like they were cooked yesterday, and I had the same experience with the twice-baked potatoes.
I asked the waitress (who was very nice) what she would order if she was here, which I often do. She brought out a paper-thin piece of dry, overcooked chicken covered in even drier monterey-jack cheese and big chunks of mushrooms and onion. The vegetables on top were fine, but the chicken/cheese combo left much to be desired.
Their salad bar had rotton cauliflower, watery lettuce, and soups that looked like they were out of a bag and sitting under heat lamps so long they were reducing down into a sauce.
If you want good food and a good atmosphere, go to Fire Fly just down the road. If you want mediocre food that tastes like it was purchased frozen and reheated, but at an admittedly cheap price, go to Neimerg's.
We had a family member in the hospital in Effingham and had heard about Niemerg's. So we decided to go,food was great, the hot food was hot and the cold was cold. Salad bar was great!! The waitress was great, she made sure our drinks were full but did not interfere with us and our meals. Alot of choices to get, will definitely go back.
Niemerg's Resturaunt is a family style resturaunt. I love going there on the weekends with the family. Even though I would like for them to have bigger glasses, they are a great place to eat. It's truly downhome food. Some people just don't realize that they have great mashed potatoes and noodles! If they don't understand what downhome food is then they are city folks.
Its not something I would choose for my wedding because you can eat it everyday, but its very comforting food.
To be honest, Niemergs is not a steakhouse by any definition. It is a family restaurant and there truthfully is a difference. They have 3 sections to this place as well as I will agree that it is popular with the local seniors. The restaurant is situated next to China Buffet and shares the parking lot with 2 local hotels. When you walk into this establishment you will find just beyond the cashier and baked goods counter to the left a diner like experience. The other is located just straight ahead from the main entrance and is more of a family sit down. Then the third section to this establishment is a bar. The quality of the food is not all that great and the salad bar could use a dramatic image change instead of the same ol' as could the menu. From an outsiders stand point I am under the impression that they do oversensationalize themselves and their product offerings. I ordered a steak while dining in the family sit down section of this establishment. The steak was overly seasoned and I had the twice baked potatoe that was not really a twice baked by culinary standards and with the inclusion of the salad bar that wasn't all that great. It truthfully was a culinary nightmare. I learned my mistake. Several months later, I decided to take a break and went one exit north of this place and accidentally stumbled upon the Fire Fly while trying to find a place to sleep overnight. What an enormous difference. A hotel clerk and I were talking about my experience at Niemergs the first time I stepped into there and she agreed that it wasn't worth writing home about. Well Folks, Obviously the choice is yours but my personal suggestion to you is to head up one exit north and you will find better offerings of restaurant picks.
Great place to eat on the cheap. My wife and I always have a full meal and pie and we never pay more than about $25 for dinner and that includes the tip! Huge menu makes it a good place to take family visiting the area.
We have recently moved to the Des Moines Iowa area after living 18 years in Effingham. There is nowhwere in Des Moines Iowa that has as great of chicken dinner or priced as cheap as Niemerg's in Effingham Illinois. I would recomend it to the President of the United States.

We have eaten at Niemerg's a number of times over the years. The food is excellent and always fresh. We also enjoy the little bar when we have to wait for a table in the dining room. The past few months the service not been as good but our last visit let us know that the service is back and better than ever. Peggy was our waitress in the bar and Fran was our waitress in the dining room. Both are outstanding waitresses and have renewed our faith in Niemerg's. If you have a chance stop by and enjoy one of Effinghams best places.
Every time we eat at Niemerg's we have a wonderful experience. Just be sure to prepare for a wait, because everyone knows Niemerg's is the place to eat on the weekends!! You can always have a cocktail in the Brassrail in the meantime. yay niemerg's!! By the way we love Niemerg's so much they're catering our wedding!!
