Shogun Japanese Rstrnt Teppan, Rockford

This review will be strange coming from me, as I thought I was one who did NOT like sushi! However, Shogun has changed my mind. I absolutely LOVED it, along with the simple cucumber salad. It was simple yet so good with a complex flavor profile. I got the surf roll, which was whitefish tempura, crab, lettuce, avocado, & cucumbers baked with spicy crab mix on top and 3 different sauces on top. My husband got the beef bento box & upgraded the California roll to the harvest roll. I couldn't believe how much the spicy crab baked topping adding to the basic California roll. We got the beef sashimi appetizer and my husband melted when he tried it! I will be taking my husband back on our next 'date night' as a surprise, as I think he may be in love :)

First off may I say that those of you who claimed to wait over an hour to be seated, did you make a reservation and was all of your party on time because we have never had a problem sitting in a fairly prompt manner on either a friday or saturday night. The food is excellent and the staff is very nice. The bartenders make excellent martinis and the sushi was excellent. The best I have had in a long time. It does not compare to the overcrowded, hustle and bustle of JMK with their moderate chefs, poor meat quality and sub par portions. I would reccomend Shogun to anyone who asked about a great sushi/teppen place.

Where do they get $4-$10 price range? They are expensive, which I wouldn't care if the service was good. When you walk in, the hostess may or may not acknowledge you, when & if she does, icicles form. They don't smile, or make you feel welcome, and the last time we were there, we were told 15 minutes & we waited over an hour with NO explanation or apologies or anything! The food is ok, comparable to JMK, but the steak isn't as tender as JMK. If anyone has a choice (as in if JMK is not full), definitely go to JMK!

I would only go back if I get invited,their staff is rude, un welcoming and unprofessional, they make you wait too long. It's just a restaurant nothing out of this world. The wait time is just rediculous The employees just don't care you can be wating for over an hour and they just don't care to top it off you finally get to get to be seated and you waitress takes over 25 minutes to give us our drinks. The cheff forgot to give someone in our party their food. I have been to other restaurants and their management is so different, as in well trained and a lot of knowledge as to customer service. The only reason why we stayed there was because the birthday person picked that place. Good luck to who ever go's there.

Food quality is always very good, and atmosphere is pretty nice too. Teppan style restaurant (chef cooks at your 8 person table) is entertaining also if you've never seen it. It can get pretty busy, so get there early or get there late so you don't have to wait long to be seated.

This place is ok. But it doesn't even come close to JMK Nippon's. What a way classier place and the sushi is a 1000 times better. Plus, it's just down the street!!!

First of all when u walk in it is so beautiful! the food is great and the cheif we had was so much fun and entertaining! the downside will only be that u r seated with others not in your party! bummer! but other than that the food is the best in Rockford and it connect to a lounge as well! it's great! we never make reservations! we put our name on the list and than we go have appitizers and drinks in the lounge. it takes a while for your name to be called but I must tell u that time flys by and we dont even notice it! we love that place! I think we R going there tonight! (oh yeah! it is kind of expenceive! )

I was very impressed on Shogun. The sushi was fresh and very tasty Our chef for the teppan dinner was real fun and the portions were great. And they have a nice bar connected to the resturaunt. We will be going back soon!

i've been to several japanese restaurants. i've had teppan from nippons, benihana & of course shogun. hands down shogun rocks! better tasting & more food! as far as sushi...shogun has an extensive list so you're guarenteed to find something that fits your taste buds. also, they've added a few more appetizers that are seriously amazing! last but not least...awesome martini list! check it out!

I like Shogun better than JMK because the prices are a little cheaper and you get a lot more food with it. I love the atmosphere, especially since they have remodeled parts of it. I'll always recommend this place!
