Fried Green Tomatoes, Galena

My wife and I recently spent an extended weekend in Galena. After reading the many excellent reviews of your establishment on Yahoo and Open Table, my wife and I were very excited to attend the Heitz wine dinner on Saturday March 26, 2011. Unfortunately, I am writing to express our disappointment with the event. As reference, we have had many fine dining experiences over our 22 years of marriage including several wine dinners at Kirsch’s in Lake Geneva, WI. My wife does not eat fish but I love the stuff and felt the salmon served did not have a firm texture and was not very fresh tasting. Although cooked to our liking [Medium and Medium Rare] I did not think the beef served was true Kobe beef as it did not compare in texture or taste to the beef tenderloin we’ve had elsewhere [the Chop House in Lake Geneva, WI for example]. In addition, everyone at our table commented that the quantity of wine provided at each course was about what you would get at a wine tasting event and was inadequate for a dinner event such as this. I would say that during the first 3 courses we got may be the equivelent of a single full glass of wine. The bottom line is that for the price paid [$89/person], we could have had a much better dinner somewhere else and split a full bottle of wine. I am sorry to say that this event did not come close to our expectations or other similar wine dinner experiences we’ve had for the same cost. I would like to end this on a positive note by saying that the service staff was well trained and very professional.

Fried Green Tomatoes is the best place in Galena Illinois. The food was freshly prepared and the service was flawless to match it they had a great wine menu. We are so glad my brother recommended that we go here. The chicken piccata was very good over red potatoes and the other dish we had was the red snapper done with a mustard cream sauce interesting combination but it was soooo good. We made reservations through opentable so we got the points and the girl was very nice and seated us according to our requests. We do not go to galena often but we will be going to fried green tomatoes again for dinner when we do go back.

Had a great evening at Fried Green Tomatoes. Happened to be there on a Friday night and tried their Prime Rib special. Excellent prime rib dinner. Great service, quality food, and the special was very affordable. Highly recommend it!

Fried Green Tomatoes is a beautiful restaurant located right on main street in Galena. We had the tomatoes for an appetizer and they are pretty good. This restaurant is a great place for dinner. Excellent service paired with an outstanding wine menu. My wife had their pasta dish and I had the seabass which was wonderful. Great sauces and the fish was very well done. Large portions followed by a wonderful dessert platter. We’ll be back soon.

My first experience here was wonderful. I had fresh mushroom-stuffed ravioli in a spicy cream sauce. This particular entre was GREAT! I do agree with the spendiness of this establishment, but I will continue to endorse Fried Green Tomatoes as long as I keep having good experiences there. Check it out at least once!

Very good place but go to vinny vanucchis if you would like a better atmosphere and price.

Was a great and romantic experience- we caught the time that the waitress and waiters were singing some incredible songs to add to the evening experience. Love the fried gr tomatoes and the other food was also a great taste treat. Can not wait to go again.

I can't understand why this place is so popular in Galena. Its very mediocre and the food is overpriced. Six of us went to dinner there recently. I had been to the old location twice and this was my second time at the new location. I should mention that I didn't choose the restaurant the most recent two times as I was part of a larger group. This final time, one of us had to send our food back because it was considerably overcooked and the rest of us were totally neutural. No one remarked that there food was especailly good. This place is over-rated, over priced and a tourist trap. Surely there must be better in Galena!

We celebrated our anniversary here and had a wonderful time. The food was incredible and the service was outstanding. What a cherry on the top to this quaint little town!
