WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER. I was part of a party of 10 (we made reservations) and were seated right away; fantastic! After perusing the menu for several minutes, nothing seemed particularly appetizing, so I ended up ordering shrimp. Our waitress took our drink and food orders in a timely manner and brought out the soup quickly. The choices were chicken dumpling and some sort of butternut squash bisque. I was told by half of the party that neither soup tasted good and no one ate even half of their bowl. Fast forward to an hour later when our food FINALLY came out and we were finally able to catch the waitress and ask for refills on our drinks. Note that she had not come by to see if we needed anything or let us know that our food was taking a while but would be out soon. Here is what was wrong with our food:
1. shrimp, fries, and vegetables: Cold. Also, $17.99 for 6 shrimp, a small handful of fries, and some badly cooked vegetables
2. Philly cheesesteak and mashed potatoes: sandwich was made with pot roast meat (gross) and potatoes were cold
3. French dip and fries: also made with pot roast meat (gross)
4. Tuscany panini: cold and soggy
5. chicken schnitzel: cold
6. turkey ham club with bacon and fries: did not come with ham, fries cold
7. turkey ham club and chips: fine
8. kids hamburger and fries: hot
9. chicken dumpling soup: unappetizing
10. chicken dumpling soup: unappetizing
The waitress brought back the shrimp plate, the chicken schnitzel, and the turkey ham club to be fixed. The chicken schnitzel had been microwaved and was still cold in the middle. At this point, we were so disgusted that no one really wanted to eat anything. Most of us picked at our food, but we refused to eat microwaved food (chicken schnitzel) and a soggy sandwich (panini). We asked to speak with the manager to let her know about the bad experience - that we had been waiting for an hour for our food, which all came out cold. Unfortunately, we had another engagement to get to and were not able to wait to have those 2 dishes re-made so we asked for those 2 dishes to be taken off our bill since they would not be eaten. The manager NEVER apologized, just said that it was busy. She then proceeded to blame the whole thing on our waitress and at first did not want to take any food off the bill despite the fact that it was cold, disgusting, and not eaten. After a few minutes, the manager became exasperated and yelled across to the room to the waitress, FINE - take both of those things off the bill! This yelling caught the eye of several customers in the restaurant. Not the type of publicity one might want.
All in all, the food did not taste good, was overpriced, and was cold. The wait was long. The management was rude. I will never go back here and would advise you to do the same.
We will NEVER go back. Took a party of ten to dinner there tonight. We had a 5pm reservation, we arrived early and were seated. So far so good. We informed the hostess when we made the reservation that we had three performers in the show next door and they had to be out the door by 5:45, she said it was not a problem. Informed both the hostess and the waitress of this when we arrives, both said it was not a problem. We placed our orders at a couple minutes to five. At 5:46 our food was brought out. The plates were piping hot, the food was ice cold. Some of the orders were completely wrong. We sent dishes back and they came back five minutes later unchanged. My daughter ordered the pannini which came to her cold and soggy. I asked for a manager. Mary came to our table. I told her about our experience she offered to reheat the food. No, I do not come to a restaurant for microwaved food. She blamed our waitress, saying it was her fault. Then blamed the fact they were busy (isn t that why you make reservations, so restaurants can plan their help). I told her I wanted my dish ( a chicken a pasta dish that came to that table ice cold, was sent back, microwaved, and returned only to have the pasta turn hard as a rock) and my daughters removed from the bill. At this point Mary (the owner) yelled Fine take it off the bill, take them both off. and stomped away. No apology, just blame and excuses. She never returned to our table. The waitress came over an apologized, we informed her that the owner just threw her under the bus, if we believed Mary our waitress would not be getting a tip, after all, Mary said it was the waitresses fault. We, of course, did tip our waitress, it was very obviously NOT her fault. I truly hope that girl finds a different job, that woman is horrid. You have one chance to fix a problem, a complaining customer can turn into your loyalist customer if treated right. It is the customer who is unhappy and says nothing that you lose forever.
We take a party of 10-20 in there every few months when our children are performing next door. The food has never been great, but it is close. We will NEVER go back. We have all posted about our service from Mary (because honestly, the whole experience was fixable until her tantrum), and we have heard about others refusing to go there because of her. I would suggest that the other owner take a good look at who he is allowing to run his business. While losing us as customers will not close the place, word of mouth and reviews are very powerful. Quite honestly, had Mary just said, I am so sorry for tonight, let me bring you a new dish, we would have been happy. Maybe offer us a cup of coffee while we waited.
So, all in all, if you want cold, soggy food, while the owner throws a tantrum, I suggest Hillside. If not, walk right by.
I went to the Hillside recently because I happened to see a sign on Lincoln Highway advertising their $10 pies. Inside, the restaurant appeared to be slightly more upscale than I'd anticipated for a restaurant advertising pies. I sat down and ordered an appetizer of fried calamari and a piece of pie. I've had a lot of fried calamari in my day, and this was the absolute worst, hands down. I suspect it was the cheapest pre-made, frozen stuff that Sysco sells. What was even worse is that it arrived with ranch dressing. Usually, fried calamari comes with marinara sauce. Sometimes, it will come with cocktail sauce. I've never seen it served with ranch dressing. I looked at the online menu and saw it's listed as: Calamari con salsa bianchi. The person who wrote the menu is pretty brave.
Oh, the pie was good, but it wasn't even on the menu. I should have just gotten it to go.
We met a long-time family friend at the Hillside and was pleasantly suprised with the atmosphere and the quality of food delivered to our table. This was a great dining experience and was well worth the trip. The service was great. It was an all-around wonderful experience.
Don't go. DeKalb is small and doesn't have much in the way of restaurants, but we just dined there as a family today and were totally unimpressed. The charm and tradition they profess on their website are exaggerated. Only the bread tasted homemade. Overpriced, cramped and not worth it. The ribeye steak that my son got was 1/3 fat and looked like it came from Ponderosa. For that they charged $19.50. Rip.
We've been going to the Hillside for over 15 years. We make a special trip each fall for their Octoberfest. Sometimes we go every weekend from late September through October. The food is always wonderful, no matter what season it is. Their pumpkin pie is better than my homemade!! Mary and Jim, St. Charles, IL
