A friend and I went to Montarra last night and we had an absolutely wonderful dinner! I had the scallops and my friend had the filet. We started with their signature citrus salad, which included fresh berries. It was delicious. We ordered the risotto of the day, roasted red peppers, mushroom and basil as a small plate. It was incredible. I could have eaten that as my dinner it was so amazing. When my scallops came, I was so impressed. Beautiful presentation on a rectangle plate with a bed of arugula, mushrooms and fresh tomatoes as a garnish. My friend loved her filet and we both felt very happy with our choice to try Montarra. We each had a glass of wine and that was also very tasty. We didn t have room for dessert but we did have coffee. Our whole bill came to $125 before tip. This is a little more pricey than many of the other restaurants in Algonquin but definitely worth it. I will be bringing my husband back next time. In response to some of the other comments about the hostess, the hostesses were both friendly and greeted us immediately. We had a reservation for 6pm and got seated when we arrived. Our wait person, Ashley was also very friendly and accomodating. She was attentive but I never felt rushed. My friend and I sat and talked for 2 hours. Wonderful experience.
Last year we had planned to go here for a nice steak dinner for our anniversary. We walked in and saw the hostess sitting down talking to a few of her coworkers, we just stood there for like 2 minutes before she finally came over to us and was like um can i help you? she was so rude, I asked her if we could look at a menu before we sit down because we wanted to make sure that they had some vegetarian options for me because he eats meat and i do not. She like um why? finally she coughed up the menus while we sat in the foyer looking at the menu we mutually decided not to eat there because of the snotty hostess. If you don't want to treat us with respect we are not gonna give you are business. Great job guys
Used to love the place but the continuous changes in owners, chefs, and staff makes it in-consistant. I've had more good meals than bad ones at M, but if I'm going out with my wife for a nice meal I expect it to be spot on each time and the servers to know about the food and the wine. I was actually considering going tonight but am thinking twice about it.
Great atmosphere, great food.
The only thing bad about the place is the price of the meals.
The average price if you don't stick to appetizers or pasta is $20-$30 per plate.
It is definitely worth it, but it's not a place I can afford to go to very often.
Hostess was snotty but waitress made up for it. Walked us through the menu, made suggestions, didn't treat us like the country cousins. The place could use some noise dampeners though. My husband and I spent a mostly silent anniversary dinner as we couldn't hear each other over the noise at the bar (and then that loud party was seated right next to us). Food was delish! Steaks cooked to perfection (which for me is barely cooked and I can so rarely (pun intended) get that from a restaurant). Lobster tail a little chewy but still tasty. Dessert excellent as well. Not sure what everyone sees/tastes in corn-fed beef as the flavor just isn't there but excellent cuts nontheless. Unfortunately the noise overwhelmed the whole experience and we will probably not go back. I like my special, eating-out-meals to be QUIET PLEASE and it is quieter at Denny's or IHOP on Mother's Day! Hmmm, wonder if they do meals to-go...
We celebrated our 29th anniversary at Montarra. Chef David promised us a special menu and he delivered with flying colors! Delicious. Problem, our waitress. She seemed distracted when taking our order, brought the deserts while were still eating our entrees and even though she apoligized, she brought them back out seconds, literally, after we finished our entrees. They were just barely cool at that point. They were still declicious and we would order them again, hopefully next time they would be served correctly. The resturant is lovely, the food excellent (we are vegetarians-no meat whatsoever), but the staff could improve their attitude.
WOW! This place is top notch! I would recommend this place over all in the area. The owner is a bit rude, but the food came out and our waiter, Bu(something?) was outstanding! The wine was just as excellent as the service and the food! Definitely returning!!
We have been coming here as a family 8-12 times a year and have always been very pleased with the service but blown away by the amazing Onion soup and incredible salads. The available smaller portions are just perfect when are just right and light. And we had no problem using several coupons over the last few months. Half price wine night is also a great deal.
