Have been to this restaurant 3 or 4 times and thoroughly enjoyed dining experience. However, last night was another story. Hostess forgot to seat us even with a 7pm reservation we waited 45 minutes. We tried to be gracious about the mix up and said no problem. Then our meal took forever to be served. The server told us our meal order was placed behind a table of 16. My husbands prime rib was cold and my sons salmon was over seasoned. Was very disappointing.
I saw this on the food network last night so my wife and I drove 1 1/2 hours to check the place out. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't great by any means, but the service was very good.
Before the appetizers they brought us bread with butter, the bread was fantastic, it tasted like pretzels, but the second piece they brought had hard, cold butter (a cardinal sin in my book).
We started with the whiskey shrimp appetizer, good, but a very small portion with a not so small price.
For our meal we both had the bacon wrapped fillet mignon with conch, again quite pricey, the fillet was tasty and cooked perfectly but the vegetables they served with it were horrible. We also both had the broccoli cheese soup with our meal, which tasted like processed cheese dip.
For the price, I would say pass on going here again. We could have gone to our favorite restaurant twice with change left over, and wouldn't have had to do the three hour round trip drive.
Laast saturday we decided to take a short trip and check out The Shanty. I saw it on DDD and wanted to see what all the hubaloo was about. Currently they are in the process of remodeling and I wasnt sure if the place was even open. They wer. I ordered the cajun burger. It was 10oz. of what seemed to be hand packed beef. Very tender, well presented. Hands down the best burger in the area. As we were leaving I told my wife that we will be back.
I had to try this place and see what all the rave was about. What a disapointment! The only thing half way decent is the whiskey shrimp. I ordered a porter house steak that was the worst steak I have ever had in my life. It was a horrible cut of meat that was basically all fat. If I was a restaurant owner I would be embaressed to serve such cuts.
We decided to try the SHANTY because we heard it was featured on one of the food network shows. We ordered the orange tequila salmon, whiskey shrimp (both were featured items on the show). We had a child that ordered tacos.
The orange tequila salmon clearly was not marinated in the citrus or tequila. the salmon was fresh but nothing special. The fish was layered over rice. The rice was old and we were afraid to eat it because it did not taste right. We asked for a baked potato instead. They added the price of the potato to the meal which we asked to remove. they did.
the whiskey shrimp arrived on white bread (Italian?) toast with some kind of unspectacular white sauce. The vegetables were grilled and looked terrible.
We ordered the osiago stuffed olive appetizer which were horrible and probably fozen. You could not even taste the olives.
The childrens tacos arrived on a plate with large fries. There were at least 15 tiny tacos, all deep fried with somekind of shriveled up filling. This was so bad, that we asked for another entre.
In the end, both of the adults were sick after the meal. The child was okay but didn't eat much.
The bill was $50! We paid $50 to get sick from the food. Do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else!!
Crowded, but magnificent. We lived in this area 15 years ago and this was our favorite resturant. Every trip back includes a trip to Shanty's, it hasn't changed. The food is fantastic, you can't improve on perfection.
